KIMM Establishes Strategic International Partnerships in Europe to Drive Global Expansion of “K-Machine”

The Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM), an eminent research institution in South Korea, has recently made significant strides in international collaboration by formalizing partnerships with diverse research institutions in Slovenia and Germany. On April 3, KIMM’s President Seog-Hyeon Ryu, along with a specialized team of researchers, visited the University of Maribor in Slovenia. This pivotal meeting culminated in the signing of a research cooperation agreement that is poised to combine KIMM’s innovative “KIMM Cyber Lab” with Maribor’s advanced open-source structural analysis technology known as PrePoMax. The integration of KIMM’s Cyber Lab program—a unique open-source software designed to address failure modes in mechanical components—with PrePoMax aims to create a robust framework for virtual reliability assessments. This partnership is particularly important as it not only fosters technological synergy but also facilitates a platform for collaborative research in autonomous machining systems, an area that is gaining substantial interest in mechanical engineering.

KIMM’s initiative, branded as “With KIMM, to the World,” seeks to widen its international collaboration horizon. By establishing strong research links within Europe, KIMM aspires to fortify its position as a leader in machinery and materials research on a global scale. The cooperation with Slovenia exemplifies a strategic effort to expand KIMM’s outreach in Eastern Europe, a region noted for its engineering prowess and burgeoning technological advancements. The partnership holds the promise of integrating Slovenia’s expertise into KIMM’s existing research ecosystem, enhancing the depth and breadth of their projects.

In keeping with its objectives of global engagement, KIMM has a proud history of forging partnerships in Eastern Europe, evident from its prior collaborations with relevant institutions in Lithuania and the Czech Republic. Their 2022 agreement with Lithuania’s Center for Physical Sciences and Technology set a solid precedent for subsequent collaborations, showcasing KIMM’s intent to anchor partnerships within this thriving region of Europe. The recent five-party agreement with the Czech Technical University and several domestic and international companies underscores KIMM’s relentless pursuit of collaborative research endeavors.

Moreover, KIMM’s engagement in Germany has also gained momentum. On March 28, KIMM entered into a bilateral agreement with the Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). This agreement is particularly notable given DLR’s leadership in aerospace and energy technologies, positioning KIMM to explore collaborative efforts on carbon reduction technologies, particularly focusing on innovative heat pump systems. This venture not only aims to advance KIMM’s research portfolio in sustainability but also aligns with global initiatives aiming to mitigate climate change through advanced engineering solutions.

In the realm of academia and research, KIMM’s collaboration with Leibniz University Hannover is noteworthy as well. On April 1, KIMM researchers met with experts at the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) to discuss advancements in autonomous machining systems. Having established a collaborative framework since 1999, both institutions are now poised to enhance their cooperative efforts in developing smart machine tools and establishing innovative energy-saving technologies. This ongoing partnership exemplifies the significance of sustained academic collaboration in propelling technology forward.

Furthermore, participation in prestigious events such as Hannover Messe 2025 underscores KIMM’s commitment to staying at the forefront of industrial technology. Attending this renowned trade fair—where manufacturers, researchers, and policymakers converge—grants KIMM insight into prevailing trends and offers opportunities for invaluable networking.
