Effective immediately, Dr. David E. Winchester has taken on the important roles of chair of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Board of Governors (BOG) and secretary of the Board of Trustees. His tenure is set to span from 2025 to 2026, a time during which he is expected to navigate the complexities of cardiovascular health policies and strategies, while leading efforts aimed at improving heart health on a national level. Winchester’s election comes at a crucial time as cardiovascular disease continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, underscoring the need for dedicated leadership in this sector.

Leading the BOG means that Winchester will represent governors from a diverse array of chapters across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, as well as international collaborations from Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico. This experience enables him to tap into a broad spectrum of perspectives, which is essential for addressing the multifaceted challenges in cardiovascular care delivery and health systems management. The BOG acts as a grassroots organization for the ACC, a prominent cardiovascular team encompassing over 56,000 professionals globally engaged in the prevention and treatment of heart conditions.

Dr. Winchester views his appointment as both a considerable honor and a unique challenge. He is acutely aware of the diversity across the ACC chapters and is passionate about enhancing the quality of heart health initiatives tailored to local communities. His leadership will be vital in executing the strategic objectives of the ACC while empowering individual chapters to realize their own goals. The recognition of diversity within these chapters highlights the need for customized approaches to tackle the distinct health issues faced by various populations.

Throughout his career, active participation in the ACC has been a cornerstone for Winchester. His journey began as a member of the Fellow-in-Training Council, reflecting his steadfast commitment to continuous learning and professional development. Over the years, he has held several leadership roles within the ACC’s Florida chapter, culminating in his position as chapter governor. These experiences have afforded him valuable insights into the operational dynamics of the ACC, equipping him to lead effectively in his new role.

Winchester specifically credits influential figures like Drs. Rick A. Nishimura and Patrick T. O’Gara, both of whom have served as mentors through the ACC Emerging Faculty program. This initiative not only cultivates emerging leaders in cardiovascular medicine but also emphasizes the importance of education and mentorship in the healthcare landscape. One of Winchester’s most enriching undertakings has been chairing the writing group for the appropriate use criteria for imaging in chronic coronary disease, a project that emphasized his dual passion for clinical excellence and leadership.

The current state of cardiovascular clinical practice poses considerable challenges. Winchester elaborates that the achievement of healthy practice dynamics is hindered by multiple barriers, including non-competitive reimbursement rates, bureaucratic prior authorization processes, and the intricacies that accompany various practice ownership models, whether academic or private. These hurdles create significant frustrations for clinicians, ultimately influencing patient care and outcomes, thus emphasizing the urgent need for reform. The ACC’s commitment to advocating for systemic changes at the national level is pivotal in fostering a healthier practice environment.

One of the standout features of the ACC is its grassroots structure, which reinforces the importance of local chapters in collective advocacy efforts. Winchester underscores that fostering a strong chapter system is essential in realizing the ACC’s strategic ambitions effectively across diverse states. He emphasizes the ongoing necessity for chapters to serve as local representatives who express the concerns and aspirations of their members, thereby facilitating systemic advocacy in cardiovascular healthcare.

Mentorship and collaborative growth have profoundly shaped Winchester’s experiences and aspirations within the ACC. Beginning in his fellowship training, he had the opportunity to learn from established ACC leaders and past presidents, which significantly influenced his professional trajectory. He recognizes the importance of mentorship and aims to extend similar support for incoming ACC governors. This mentorship is crucial in establishing a smooth transition for new leaders, allowing them to quickly adapt and excel in their roles.

Academically, Dr. Winchester holds a prestigious position as a Professor of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He also serves as the Assistant Chief of Cardiology at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, intertwining the realms of clinical practice and academic medicine. His extensive expertise spans clinical cardiology, noninvasive imaging, health services research, and enhancing care appropriateness—each element contributing to his vision for improving cardiovascular healthcare delivery systems.

Winchester’s educational journey began with his medical degree from the University of South Florida, followed by an internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia, wherein he honed his diagnostic acumen. His passion for cardiology blossomed during his fellowship at the University of Florida, where he cultivated his interest in both clinical and academic pursuits aimed at transforming cardiovascular care. His comprehensive background uniquely positions him to tackle the complex challenges that lie ahead in his leadership role.

The board’s new lineup for the 2025-2026 term is equally impressive, with Dr. Christopher Kramer assuming the presidency, supported by Vice President Dr. Roxana Mehran. Additionally, distinguished Board of Trustees members Samuel O. Jones, IV and Geoffrey A. Rose will work alongside Winchester, while Dr. Renuka Jain has been appointed as the Board of Governors Chair-elect. This diverse leadership team heralds a promising future for cardiovascular health advocacy and reform.

The American College of Cardiology has earned a reputation as a global leader in advancing cardiovascular care and enhancing heart health for everyone. Having been at the forefront of professional medical education since 1949, the ACC operates in over 140 countries, credentialing professionals who meet rigorous standards and guiding the creation of health policies that prioritize optimal patient outcomes. By fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence in cardiovascular medicine, the ACC aims to facilitate a world where knowledge truly enhances patient care.

In summary, Dr. Winchester’s ascension as ACC’s BOG Chair and Secretary of the Board of Trustees reflects a pivotal moment not just for him but for cardiovascular medicine as a whole. The challenges facing today’s healthcare landscape require visionary leadership, unwavering commitment, and a collaborative spirit among professionals. By uniting chapters across various regions, advocating for change, and fostering the next generation of leaders, the ACC under Winchester’s guidance is poised to make significant strides in advancing heart health for all.
