Biodiversity Data Journal Unveils New Data Portal on GBIF

The Biodiversity Data Journal (BDJ), renowned for its open-access academic contributions, has recently launched a new portal through the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). This significant advancement marks BDJ as the second scholarly title to leverage the hosted portals service provided by GBIF, an international initiative working to ensure that biodiversity data is openly accessible to all around the globe. The partnership blends the fields of biodiversity research and advanced data infrastructure, enabling users to delve into an ever-expanding repository of biological information.

The core objective of the BDJ portal is to enhance data engagement at multiple scales—national, institutional, regional, and thematic. This platform is designed not merely as a data repository but also as an interactive space that invites users, regardless of their expertise level, to access and reuse an array of biodiversity datasets. As such, the portal has been engineered for intuitive navigation and user-friendly interactions, thereby maximizing the potential for data exploration and discovery.

Pensoft, the publisher behind BDJ, has been at the forefront of scholarly innovation, initially piloting the GBIF-hosted portal with BDJ. Following its successful implementation, the company plans to replicate this model across at least 35 additional biodiversity journals. This initiative promises to significantly broaden the scope of GBIF-hosted platforms, moving towards a more interconnected web of biodiversity research resources. The commitment to expanding these platforms is a testimony to the progressive vision Pensoft holds for biodiversity journals.

Currently, users of the BDJ portal can explore nearly 300,000 recorded occurrences of various biological organisms globally, sourced from the journal’s extensive publication history. Moreover, the portal offers seamless access to over 800 datasets that accompany published articles, along with more than 1,000 citations linking to associated journal entries. This vast database not only serves academic researchers but also supports grassroots advocates and the general public interested in biodiversity.

What sets the portal apart is its robust search functionality, which allows users to refine their queries based on several parameters, including geographical location, taxonomic classification, IUCN Global Red List category, and even geological context. This range of filters aids researchers and conservationists in pinpointing the precise data they require, while also illuminating the vastness of biodiversity documented in BDJ publications.

The dashboard on the BDJ portal goes beyond mere data provision. It grants users insight into multiple statistics regarding the accumulated datasets, empowering them to derive meaningful analyses from the information available. The ability to identify potentially related records through clustering features adds another layer of depth to the user experience, promoting a comprehensive understanding of specific specimens and their environmental contexts.

In addition to being an invaluable research tool, the BDJ portal serves as an informational hub for users to glean insights about the journal itself, including its aims and accomplishments. By linking to its news section, users are kept informed about the latest developments and initiatives within the BDJ, fostering an ongoing relationship and dialogue between the journal and its readership.

Since its launch in 2013, BDJ has continuously innovated. Its mission to merge narrative and open data in peer-reviewed settings has placed it at the vanguard of scholarly publishing in biodiversity research. This commitment to innovation is exemplified by the adoption of the ARPHA Writing Tool (AWT), an XML-based platform that streamlines the submission and review process for authors. By integrating key databases like GBIF and BOLD, AWT facilitates an accelerated path to publication, further disseminating biodiversity data to interested communities.

In recent developments, BDJ has also piloted new methodologies like the “Nanopublications for Biodiversity” format. This approach entails creating machine-actionable scientific statements, or "pixels," aimed at ensuring that key biodiversity knowledge is preserved and accessible for future use. The implementation of such innovations speaks to BDJ’s forward-thinking ethos and its dedication to aligning scholarly practices with the demands of contemporary research paradigms.

Voiced in laudatory remarks, Prof. Dr. Lyubomir Penev, founder and CEO of Pensoft, elaborated on the pivotal long-term collaboration with Plazi, emphasizing how it has facilitated the streamlined publication and dissemination of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) biodiversity data. His commentary illuminated the unique workflows BDJ employs, which empower authors to contribute biodiversity data to platforms like GBIF and BOLD efficiently, enriching the scholarly ecosystem.

Further endorsing these advancements, Vince Smith, editor-in-chief of BDJ, articulated that the launch of the BDJ portal, along with forthcoming portals for other Pensoft journals, aims to inspire fellow publishers. The drive toward creating a more interconnected, open-access ecosystem for biodiversity research is essential in a world where knowledge and data often remain siloed.
