Applied Microbiology International has taken a significant step toward enhancing diversity and inclusion within the scientific community by announcing its partnership with the groundbreaking Minoritised Life Scientists Future Forum (MLSFF) conference. Set against the backdrop of Birmingham’s International Convention Centre from March 31 to April 2, 2025, this event promises to be a vital platform for life scientists hailing from minoritised and underrepresented backgrounds across the United Kingdom.

The MLSFF represents a remarkable initiative, marking the first conference of its kind in Europe dedicated exclusively to amplifying voices from diverse backgrounds in the life sciences. In an era where collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches are increasingly important, this forum seeks to provide a space that not only acknowledges diversity but actively celebrates it. By inviting individuals from an extensive array of backgrounds—ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, neurodiverse persons, those from low-income families or widening participation backgrounds, mature students, and members of the LGBTQ+ community—the conference embodies a commitment to bringing together all who can contribute to or benefit from such an enriching environment.

At the core of this initiative is a firm belief in the transformative power of diverse perspectives. The MLSFF is committed to fostering conversations that celebrate intersectionality and the unique experiences each participant brings to the table. These discussions will span a multitude of topics relevant to all STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines, signifying an outward-looking approach that encourages cross-pollination of ideas and collaboration among various scientific domains.

One of the keynote speakers at the MLSFF will be Professor Emmanuel Adukwu, a distinguished figure within the scientific community. Currently serving as the Deputy Head of the School of Applied Sciences at UWE Bristol, Professor Adukwu is also a prominent member of the ‘Black in Biomedical Research’ Advisory Group (BBRAG). This initiative, developed in partnership with the Medical Research Council (MRC), aims to confront and ameliorate the underrepresentation of Black researchers within the UK biomedical sector. His involvement speaks to the commitment that the MLSFF and its partners have to ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.

Participants at the MLSFF can expect a rich array of opportunities designed to support their professional growth. The conference will feature mentorship schemes and a variety of workshops aimed at providing skills and knowledge that are crucial in today’s competitive scientific landscape. In addition, volunteering opportunities and networking sessions will help foster connections between students, early-career professionals, industry leaders, and academic representatives. The importance of these connections cannot be overstated; they not only build invaluable relationships but also empower attendees to take bold strides in their respective careers.

Moreover, the MLSFF is designed to be inclusive from its inception. Abstract submissions are welcome from all life science fields, including emerging disciplines such as engineering and data science. This broad approach ensures that every participant, regardless of their specific area of study, will have the opportunity to contribute to the dialogue and share their research findings. Recognizing the potential for innovation that can arise from interdisciplinary collaboration, the conference encourages all interested individuals to specify their backgrounds and research interests, thereby enriching the collective knowledge base and discourse at the event.

Financial accessibility is another cornerstone of the MLSFF. With routes to free attendance through registration and travel grants, the conference seeks to eliminate barriers that may be faced by those who wish to participate but might not have the means. By offering financial support, the MLSFF ensures that its commitment to diversity is not only theoretical but also practical, translating into tangible opportunities for individuals from various economic backgrounds to attend and engage fully with the conference experience.

As a testament to its dedication to diversity, the MLSFF aligns closely with the values upheld by Applied Microbiology International. AMI has a longstanding history as the oldest microbiology society in the UK, serving a global community of microbiologists. With a mission to promote inclusivity in scientific discussions and decision-making processes, AMI provides funding and resources to support research initiatives and events that drive forward the sustainability development goals it has adopted.

Publication is also a pivotal part of AMI’s mission; the organization publishes the esteemed industry magazine, The Microbiologist, alongside three internationally acclaimed journals in partnership with Oxford University Press. These platforms serve not only to share the latest research but also to amplify the voices and contributions of applied microbiologists worldwide, ensuring that their insights are incorporated into international, evidence-based decision-making.

Ultimately, the MLSFF conference is not merely an event; it represents a pivotal movement toward inclusivity and collaboration within the life sciences. By creating a welcoming environment for those from diverse backgrounds to engage in meaningful dialogue, share their research, and learn from one another, the MLSFF positions itself as a catalyst for innovation and change within the scientific community. This conference is a call to action for all life scientists to come together, to elevate their voices and amplify their impact in a world that increasingly needs a variety of perspectives to address its most pressing challenges.

Key to the success of the MLSFF will be the enthusiasm and commitment of all who attend. As scientists come together to share their experiences and research, they contribute to a collective narrative that can inspire future generations. The conference provides a rare opportunity to not only celebrate scientific achievements but also to confront the biases and barriers that still exist within the field. Together, participants can lay the groundwork for a more inclusive, innovative, and effective scientific community that benefits everyone, paving the way for transformative advancements in research and beyond.

In conclusion, the Minoritised Life Scientists Future Forum is set to be an unmissable event that highlights the importance of diversity in the scientific realm. Through its focus on inclusivity, the MLSFF embodies a vision for a collaborative future in the life sciences, where every voice is valued, every contribution is recognized, and every participant has the opportunity to thrive.
