Aluminum matrix composites are drawing growing attention for use in harsh marine environments, according to a review published in Discover Materials on 27 October 2026. The article, authored by Ankit Tyagi, Sachin Sirohi and Sandeep Kumar Sharma, examines recent progress in powder metallurgy processing of these composites, which combine an aluminum matrix with reinforcing materials to outperform conventional monolithic aluminum alloys in several respects.

The review highlights three key advantages that make aluminum matrix composites candidates for maritime service: a superior ability to withstand dynamic stresses, increased corrosion resistance, and reduced weight compared with standard aluminum alloys. These characteristics are relevant to marine settings marked by intense corrosion, mechanical stresses and short-term exposure to seawater, the authors note.

Powder metallurgy has emerged as a valuable production route for aluminum-based composites because it offers better microstructure control, a more uniform distribution of reinforcements and lower processing temperatures than conventional casting methods. The review describes how advances in techniques including mechanical alloying, spark plasma sintering, hot isostatic pressing and microwave sintering have enabled the development of high-performance composites reinforced with carbon-based nanomaterials, ceramic particles and hybrid reinforcements.

The authors state that the findings could be useful for researchers and engineers working on marine structural sections, offshore platforms, ships and underwater equipment who are seeking to develop better aluminum composite materials. The article is published as an open access review, and the version shared at publication is a peer-reviewed, accepted manuscript carrying a permanent DOI, subject to further edits before the final version of record appears.
