A peer-reviewed study published in Artificial Intelligence Review argues that the reliability of modern computer vision systems depends far more on the properties of the images feeding them than is commonly acknowledged. Rizwan Khan and Zheng Zhonglong present a comprehensive experimental overview of classic and learning-based image enhancement methods, and quantify how widely used vision-based preprocessing techniques affect the models that consume their output. Their central message is that image quality and image size are not peripheral concerns but variables that can determine whether an AI system performs accurately, reproducibly, and consistently once deployed.

The authors frame their work around the need for standard benchmarks in artificial intelligence. Without agreed constraints on image quality and size, they contend, it becomes difficult to build accurate, reproducible, consistent, and explainable AI, because models may be evaluated under conditions that fall outside the limits for which they were designed. Understanding when benchmarks sit within or outside defined constraints, they argue, directly shapes the design of the tools and applications built on top of them.

A key distinction the study draws is between real-world and synthetic data. For critical applications, such as detection tasks performed in darkness, the authors emphasize that knowing whether a model was trained and tested on genuinely captured imagery or on artificially generated material matters for interpreting its performance. Their experimental review is intended to help separate these cases and to clarify how enhancement steps applied before training alter what the model ultimately learns.

The methodology combines a survey of image enhancement techniques with hands-on experimentation. The researchers measured the impact of image properties on image-quality consistency in AI training data, and evaluated performance using standard evaluation metrics. By running these experiments across multiple metrics, they were able to characterize how changes in image quality propagate through the preprocessing pipeline and into the behavior of learning-based models.

Image scaling receives particular attention. The study illustrates the relationship between scaling operations and the evaluation metrics used to judge both enhanced images and the models trained on them. The authors show that scaling interacts with metric readings, an effect they treat as central to understanding how image properties influence the evaluation of AI systems.

Beyond reviewing existing methods, the paper introduces a new instrument: the perceptual integrity measure, or PIM. This is described as a structured, perceptual, feature-based no-reference measure, formulated as a deterministic and interpretable scoring function. In practical terms, PIM aggregates meaningful image features into a single unified score, allowing image integrity to be quantified across diverse imaging conditions without requiring a pristine reference image for comparison.

The no-reference design is significant because quality assessment must then rely on the image alone. By making the scoring function deterministic and interpretable, the authors position PIM as a way to explain why an image receives a given integrity score, rather than offering an opaque number, which they link to the broader goal of explainable AI.

The authors state that the work consolidates existing knowledge in this evolving field and identifies potential directions for future research. As a comprehensive experimental review, its findings are grounded in the experiments reported rather than in claims about specific deployed systems, and the reported results concern the measurement and evaluation of image properties and enhancement methods rather than the efficacy of any particular application. Within that scope, the study offers researchers and practitioners a structured account of how image enhancement, scaling, and metric precision intersect, and argues that attending to this intersection is a prerequisite for building intelligent vision applications whose performance can be trusted under real-world imaging conditions.
