An experimental materials study reported a superplastic elongation of 10,180% in a hypoeutectic Pb-40 wt% Sn alloy processed by tube high-pressure shearing (t-HPS). The result exceeds the previously reported 7,550% record for a Pb-Sn eutectic alloy, which the study’s abstract says had stood since 1994. The article was published in the Journal of Materials Science on 18 September 2026.

According to the abstract, t-HPS fully fragmented the alloy’s primary α-dendrites and lamellar eutectic structure. This produced a well-mixed, topologically uniform duplex microstructure with an average grain size of 1.74 μm and an α/β phase ratio of approximately 50:50. The researchers report that this phase balance stabilized the fine-grained structure and prevented significant grain growth during superplastic flow.

Tensile testing at 423 K and an initial strain rate of 1.0 × 10−2 s−1 yielded the reported elongation of 10,180%. The abstract also states that high elongations were obtained at 373 and 413 K, although it does not provide the corresponding elongation values or further details of those tests. The authors describe t-HPS as a route for producing a microduplex structure with an optimal phase balance and identify the findings as a possible pathway toward high-strain-rate superplastic forming.

This report is based on the journal’s abstract and article preview rather than a full assessment of the underlying paper. The preview does not expose the complete experimental procedures, sample-preparation details, replicate counts, uncertainty estimates, or data for the tests conducted at 373 and 413 K. The reported result is therefore a laboratory observation in the tested Pb-40 wt% Sn alloy and does not establish equivalent performance in other compositions or under other processing conditions.
