BMC Geriatrics, an open access journal dedicated to the health and healthcare of older people, has announced that it is recruiting new Editorial Board Members. The call comes as the journal reports a steady increase in submissions, a growth trend that reflects the expanding global research effort devoted to aging and the medical needs of older adults. According to the journal’s announcement, the expansion of the editorial team is intended to ensure that the journal can cope with the rising volume of manuscripts while maintaining the high editorial standards that reviewers and readers expect. The move offers an unusually transparent window into how a modern scientific journal organizes one of the most important, and often least visible, functions in science: the management of peer review.

The journal is inviting applications from researchers working across six broad disciplinary areas that together map the landscape of contemporary geriatrics and gerontology. These are biology and technology; health services research; neurology, stroke and cognition; physical functioning, physical health and activity; psychology, psychiatry and quality of life; and public health, nutrition and epidemiology. The breadth of the list is telling. Aging research is no longer confined to clinical medicine or laboratory biology. It now spans genomics and cellular senescence on one end and health policy, epidemiology and digital technology on the other, and journals that serve the field must recruit editors capable of evaluating work across that entire spectrum.

BMC Geriatrics describes itself as an open access, peer-reviewed journal that considers articles on all aspects of the health and healthcare of older people, including the effects of healthcare systems and policies. Crucially, its scope extends beyond clinical studies of disease. The journal also welcomes research focused on the aging process itself, including cellular, genetic and physiological processes as well as cognitive modifications. This places the journal at the intersection of two research communities that have historically operated in parallel: clinicians studying conditions such as stroke, dementia and frailty in older patients, and basic scientists investigating the molecular mechanisms that drive biological aging.

One of the most striking elements of the announcement is the journal’s explicit statement of its editorial philosophy. BMC Geriatrics states that it does not make editorial decisions on the basis of the interest of a study or its likely impact. Instead, studies must be scientifically valid. For research articles, this means a scientifically sound research question, the use of suitable methods and analysis, and adherence to community-agreed standards relevant to the research field. This approach, often associated with the BMC series and its stated ethos of being open, inclusive and trusted, contrasts with the selection model of journals that prioritize novelty or anticipated attention. Under the validity-based model, a rigorous null result or a careful replication can find a home alongside a headline-grabbing discovery.

The criteria for prospective Editorial Board Members are specific and, for early-career researchers, demanding. Candidates should have a minimum of fifteen research papers published in reputable, English-language, peer-reviewed journals. They should also have been frequently listed as a corresponding author, in the first or last author position, during the last five years. These requirements are designed to identify scientists who are not merely productive but who have taken responsibility for the design, supervision and integrity of research projects. Corresponding authorship, in particular, signals that a researcher has managed a study from conception through publication and has served as the point of contact for the scientific community, editors and reviewers.

Beyond publication metrics, the journal is explicit about the qualities it seeks. Suitable Editorial Board Members are described as individuals who support the journal’s ethos, scope, editorial standards and policies, and who act as committed advocates representing BMC Geriatrics within the scientific community. They are also expected to provide a professional and supportive service to authors, ensuring that the manuscripts for which they are responsible fulfill the requirements of the journal and are handled efficiently and appropriately through peer review. The emphasis on author service reflects a growing recognition within scientific publishing that the review process, long criticized for opacity and delay, functions best when editors communicate clearly and manage timelines actively.

The core responsibility of the role is the management of the peer review process itself. Editorial Board Members are accountable for the scientific quality of the manuscripts they handle, and they must adhere to the ethos, editorial standards, policies and scope of the journal. In practical terms, this means selecting appropriate external reviewers, evaluating their reports, weighing conflicts of interest, and making or recommending decisions on whether a manuscript meets the journal’s threshold of scientific validity. The journal estimates the workload at approximately two manuscripts per month within each editor’s field of expertise, a figure that suggests the role is designed to be compatible with an active research career rather than a full-time editorial position.

New editors will not be left to learn the job alone. According to the announcement, Editorial Board Members will receive training, and the journal’s in-house editorial team will provide administrative support. This division of labor is characteristic of large open access publishers, where professional editors handle the administrative machinery of submission systems, reviewer invitations and production, while academic editors supply the domain expertise needed to judge the science. For the researchers who take on the role, the position offers a direct influence on the quality control of their field, an insider’s view of emerging work, and a recognized credential of scientific standing and service.

The recruitment drive also arrives at a moment of intense scientific interest in aging. Research into the biology of aging has accelerated in recent years, with work on cellular senescence, telomere biology, mitochondrial function, proteostasis and the genetics of longevity attracting substantial attention and investment. At the same time, populations across high-income and many middle-income countries are aging rapidly, placing health services research, geriatric medicine and public health at the center of policy debates. Journals such as BMC Geriatrics sit at the confluence of these currents, publishing everything from trials of interventions in older patients to studies of the molecular pathways that determine healthspan. The need for editors who can competently referee such a wide range of material is a direct consequence of that scientific expansion.

For researchers who meet the criteria and are interested in applying, the journal has opened an online application form through which candidates can submit their details. The announcement closes with a straightforward invitation: the journal looks forward to hearing from applicants. Whether the expansion succeeds in keeping review times short and standards high will depend on the scientists who step forward. But the call itself is a reminder that the infrastructure of science, the editorial boards, reviewers and standards that decide what enters the published record, is built and maintained by working researchers, two manuscripts at a time.
