Online learning has reshaped higher education around the world, yet the psychological question of how well undergraduate students actually adjust to the digital classroom has long been measured with tools that were never designed for the task. Now, a pair of Chinese researchers has filled that gap. In a study published in BMC Psychology, Fusen Xie of Xi’an Jiaotong University and Guojun Zhao of Northwest Normal University report the development and validation of the Online Course Learning Adjustment Scale for Undergraduates, a 22-item psychometric instrument built specifically to capture how students adapt to the distinctive demands of online course learning. The work arrives at a moment when universities continue to blend remote and face-to-face instruction, and when educators urgently need reliable ways to identify students who are quietly struggling behind their screens.

The problem the researchers set out to solve is deceptively simple to state but difficult to measure. Learning in an online course is not merely classroom learning transmitted through a webcam. It strips away many of the scaffolds that traditional education provides: the physical presence of an instructor, the ambient social pressure of peers, the structured rhythm of a timetable, and the immediate feedback loops of face-to-face conversation. In their place, it imposes new burdens—heavy demands on self-regulation, vulnerability to environmental distraction, and reliance on digital skills that vary widely across the student population. Existing adjustment scales, the authors note, were developed mostly for general academic adjustment or for fully remote learning environments, and they do not map cleanly onto the hybrid reality of undergraduates who take individual courses online while otherwise living the life of a conventional student.

To build an instrument from the ground up, the researchers followed a two-phase, large-sample design that is now considered the gold standard in scale development. The first phase was devoted to generating the item pool. Xie and Zhao conducted a systematic review of the literature on learning adjustment and online education, then supplemented it with semi-structured interviews with 20 undergraduate students, inviting them to describe in their own words what made online courses easy or hard to adjust to. Draft items were then evaluated by experts and by graduate students in psychology and education, who judged each statement for relevance, clarity, and coverage of the construct. This triangulated approach—literature, lived experience, and expert judgment—produced an initial questionnaire of 29 items.

That 29-item draft was then administered to 217 undergraduates for item analysis and exploratory factor analysis, the statistical workhorse used to discover how many independent dimensions of adjustment the items actually measure. Item analysis showed that every initial item possessed adequate discriminatory power, meaning that each one reliably separated students who were adjusting well from those who were not. The exploratory factor analysis then delivered the study’s central structural finding: the items condensed cleanly into a 22-item scale organized around four factors. The researchers labeled these online learning ability, online learning behavior, online learning attention, and online learning attitude. Together, the four factors explained 57.83 percent of the total variance in responses, a proportion that is respectable for a newly developed multidimensional scale in educational psychology.

Each of the four dimensions captures a facet of adjustment that instructors and counselors will recognize from experience. Online learning ability reflects the technical and cognitive competencies students need to navigate digital platforms and manage their own comprehension remotely. Online learning behavior covers the practical habits of engagement—attendance at virtual sessions, completion of tasks, use of learning resources. Online learning attention addresses perhaps the most modern of the challenges: sustaining concentration in an environment full of competing digital and household distractions. Online learning attitude, finally, measures the motivational and emotional stance students take toward online courses, which shapes whether they invest effort or disengage.

With a structure in hand, the second phase of the study put the scale through a far more demanding test. A completely independent sample of 532 undergraduates completed the 22-item instrument, and the researchers subjected the data to confirmatory factor analysis—the statistical procedure that asks whether a hypothesized structure fits new data, rather than merely discovering one. It does. The four-factor model showed a good fit to the data, with a chi-square to degrees-of-freedom ratio of 2.288, a root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) of 0.049, a comparative fit index (CFI) of 0.948, a Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) of 0.941, and a standardized root mean square residual (SRMR) of 0.047. For readers outside psychometrics, these numbers sit comfortably within the conventional thresholds for a well-fitting model: RMSEA and SRMR below 0.05 are considered excellent, while CFI and TLI above 0.95—or, by more lenient criteria, above 0.90—are regarded as strong. The researchers also compared the four-factor model against an alternative three-factor solution, and the four-factor version performed better, supporting the theoretical decision to keep attention and behavior as separate dimensions.

Reliability, the question of whether the scale produces consistent measurements, also passed muster. The total scale demonstrated good internal consistency, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.894—a value well above the 0.70 benchmark usually demanded of research instruments, indicating that the 22 items hang together as a coherent measure of overall adjustment. Split-half reliability, which compares scores derived from two halves of the item set, came in at 0.763, further confirming that the scale yields stable results regardless of which particular items are aggregated.

Validity was examined from the criterion-related angle: does the scale actually predict something that matters? The answer, according to the data, is yes. The total score and all four subscale scores were positively correlated with academic performance, with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.157 to 0.378, all statistically significant at the p < 0.01 level. In practical terms, students who report better adjustment to online course learning also tend to earn better academic outcomes. The correlations are moderate rather than overwhelming, which is exactly what one would expect—academic performance is influenced by many factors beyond adjustment, from prior achievement to course difficulty—but the consistent positive pattern across all four dimensions strengthens the claim that the scale taps something educationally meaningful rather than a statistical artifact.

The researchers also took care to satisfy the ethical and procedural standards of contemporary psychology. The study protocol was reviewed and approved by the Ethics Committee of the School of Psychology at Northwest Normal University, and all procedures were conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Written informed consent was obtained from every participant, and the authors declared no competing interests and no external funding for the work.

The practical implications of the study extend well beyond the psychometric laboratory. For universities, a validated adjustment scale offers a low-cost screening tool that can be administered at the start of a term to flag students who are struggling with the self-regulatory and attentional demands of online courses before their grades begin to slip. Because the instrument yields subscale scores, it does more than pronounce a global verdict of “adjusting” or “not adjusting”; it tells advisors where the difficulty lies. A student whose trouble is concentrated in the attention dimension may benefit from coaching on distraction management and study environments, whereas a student weak on learning ability may need targeted digital-skills training. Course designers, too, can use the four dimensions as a checklist: if a course demands abilities, behaviors, attention, and attitudes that typical undergraduates have not yet developed, the design itself may need adjustment.

The study also speaks to a broader scientific conversation about what “adjustment” means in an era of blended learning. Classical models of student adjustment, developed in the twentieth century, assumed a shared physical campus and a largely uniform instructional format. The Xie and Zhao instrument is part of a growing effort to update those models for a world in which a student may attend a lecture in person on Monday and complete a laboratory simulation online on Tuesday. By demonstrating that online course adjustment decomposes into ability, behavior, attention, and attitude, the study gives researchers a common vocabulary for studying how students adapt, and a measurement tool that can be used across institutions, course formats, and future studies of interventions.

As with any newly developed instrument, caveats remain. The scale was developed and validated with Chinese undergraduate samples, and cross-cultural studies will be needed to confirm that the four-factor structure holds in other educational systems and languages. Longitudinal work will also be needed to show whether early adjustment scores predict later academic trajectories, not merely concurrent performance. Nonetheless, within its scope the study is methodologically thorough: two independent samples totaling nearly 750 participants, a two-step factor-analytic strategy, comparison against an alternative model, and convergent evidence from academic outcomes. The authors conclude that the scale demonstrates satisfactory factorial validity, criterion-related validity, and reliability, and may serve as a useful instrument for assessing undergraduates’ adjustment to online course learning and for identifying the areas in which students require additional educational support.

In a period when the boundary between the physical and digital campus grows blurrier each academic year, tools like this one may become as standard a part of the educational psychologist’s kit as the study-skills inventories of previous decades. For the millions of undergraduates now expected to self-regulate, focus, and stay motivated in front of a screen, the study offers something quietly significant: a formal acknowledgment that adjusting to online learning is a measurable, multidimensional psychological process—and a way to find out who needs help before the semester slips away.
