UC San Diego Health has been named California’s leading hospital system and one of the top 20 health care systems in the United States in the 2026–2027 U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” survey. The recognition covers its three hospitals—Hillcrest Medical Center, Jacobs Medical Center and East Campus Medical Center—and extends across eight nationally ranked medical specialties. The academic health system has also retained its position as the number one hospital system in San Diego for the seventh consecutive year.
The latest results represent the strongest performance in UC San Diego Health’s history in the national survey. Its highest specialty ranking was in pulmonology and lung surgery, which placed seventh nationally. Obstetrics and gynecology ranked eighth, while cardiology, heart and vascular surgery, and geriatrics each ranked fifteenth. Neurology and neurosurgery placed twenty-fourth, diabetes and endocrinology twenty-sixth, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery twenty-seventh, and cancer forty-fourth.
These rankings are based on measures intended to capture how effectively hospitals diagnose, treat and support patients with complex conditions. U.S. News evaluates clinical outcomes, patient experience, nursing care, specialist expertise and other indicators of hospital performance. Risk-adjusted mortality rates are used to account for differences in the severity of illness among patients, while data on preventable complications and patient safety help assess whether care is delivered reliably and safely.
The survey also rated UC San Diego Health as “high performing” in 22 procedures and conditions. These evaluations span a broad range of medical needs, including heart procedures, stroke care, cancer treatment and orthopedic surgery. A high-performing designation indicates that a hospital’s results meet or exceed defined standards in areas such as outcomes, staffing, technology, patient experience and the ability to provide specialized care.
Nearly 4,500 hospitals were evaluated in the 2026–2027 assessment, covering 14 adult specialties and 23 procedures and conditions. Only about 16 percent of the hospitals included in the analysis earned a “Best Hospitals” designation. The specialty rankings and procedure ratings draw on more than 800 million records of patient care, creating a large-scale comparison of treatment outcomes across the United States.
The technical foundation of the rankings is designed to distinguish hospitals that manage difficult cases successfully from those that primarily treat less complex conditions. In addition to expert assessment, U.S. News analyzes outcomes data and adjusts results for factors such as patient age, medical risk and the seriousness of the condition being treated. This approach is intended to make comparisons more meaningful by examining how patients fare relative to the level of illness they bring to the hospital.
UC San Diego Health leaders attributed the results to the integration of clinical medicine, biomedical research and advanced technology. In an academic health system, discoveries made in laboratories and clinical studies can be translated into new diagnostic tools, therapies and surgical techniques. The system’s specialty teams care for patients with serious and complicated diseases while participating in research intended to improve treatment precision, reduce complications and personalize medical decision-making.
The health system’s cardiovascular program illustrates this model. Its heart and vascular teams combine cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, imaging, critical care and rehabilitation to manage conditions ranging from coronary artery disease to structural heart disorders. By coordinating multiple specialties, hospitals can evaluate a patient’s condition from several clinical perspectives and select treatments based on anatomy, physiology, risk factors and likely long-term outcomes rather than relying on a single intervention.
UC San Diego Health is the only academic health system in the region and includes 1,101 beds across Hillcrest Medical Center, Jacobs Medical Center and East Campus Medical Center, along with the Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, Moores Cancer Center, Shiley Eye Institute and several outpatient and research facilities. Its network also includes primary care and same-day services throughout Southern California. The system shares California’s number one hospital-system distinction with UCSF Health, UCLA Health, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Stanford Health, underscoring the state’s concentration of nationally recognized academic medical centers.
