At the 2026 FIFA World Cup fan events held in key U.S. cities including Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and New York, the American Heart Association (AHA) is leading a groundbreaking public health initiative by delivering Hands-Only CPR training directly to attendees. This initiative has already resulted in more than 800,000 training compressions performed by fans, becoming one of the most extensive public CPR education efforts in the Association’s history. Given that over 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur annually in the United States, immediate intervention through CPR can significantly increase survival rates, yet many bystanders remain untrained or reluctant to act.

The American Heart Association’s Mobile CPR Unit provides hands-on, real-time instruction to empower laypeople with the critical skills needed during cardiac emergencies. Participants are taught to identify signs of cardiac arrest—such as sudden collapse and unresponsiveness—and respond effectively with the two-step Hands-Only CPR protocol: calling emergency services and delivering rapid chest compressions. These compressions must be performed hard and fast on the center of the chest, a method scientifically validated to maintain circulatory flow until professional medical help arrives.

This major intervention coincides with the global excitement generated by the FIFA World Cup festivities, leveraging the football tournament’s massive audience to promote lifesaving education. The initiative represents the largest deployment of the Mobile CPR Unit to date and aligns with the AHA’s Nation of Lifesavers™ campaign, which targets a doubling of cardiac arrest survival rates by 2030. The strategy focuses on shifting public perception and readiness to act, addressing the critical delay in bystander CPR that currently affects survival outcomes.

Scientific studies have demonstrated that hands-only CPR is as effective as conventional CPR with rescue breaths during the first several minutes post-collapse, especially in teenagers and adults. The American Heart Association continuously updates the official scientific CPR guidelines, which reinforce the importance of early chest compressions to maintain vital blood flow. With three out of four cardiac arrests occurring at home, equipping the public with accessible CPR knowledge dramatically improves the odds of saving a loved one.

FIFA Medical Director Andrew Massey emphasized the power of sport to extend the reach of vital medical training beyond the pitch, highlighting the global platform that football provides to disseminate these life-preserving skills. By situating education in dynamic, high-energy fan environments, the AHA transforms moments of celebration into critical opportunities for public health impact.

As the World Cup progresses, the American Heart Association plans to expand its presence at fan events, aiming to reinforce confidence among thousands more individuals to administer CPR, effectively reducing barriers to immediate action. This ongoing effort exemplifies the integration of large-scale public events with health promotion, showcasing a scalable model for community-based emergency response training.
