Dr. Michelle Gong Named Chair of Montefiore Einstein Department of Medicine

Michelle Ng Gong, M.D., M.S., has been officially appointed as the chair of the Montefiore Einstein Department of Medicine, affirming her leadership after serving as interim chair since May 2025. Dr. Gong’s journey with Montefiore Einstein began in 2009 when she took the helm as director of research in the critical care division. A year later, she strategically integrated the pulmonary medicine division under her leadership. Her tenure has been marked by a remarkable growth in research infrastructure, securing approximately $30 million in funding from federal agencies and private foundations, and achieving a fourfold increase in peer-reviewed scholarly publications—a significant indicator of both productivity and impact in medical science.

An NIH-funded principal investigator, Dr. Gong is internationally recognized for her investigative work on acute respiratory failure, sepsis, and strategies to prevent acute critical illness. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania before obtaining her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. Her post-graduate training includes an internal medicine residency at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, followed by a combined clinical and research fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Harvard. Complementing her clinical training, she received a Master of Science degree in epidemiology from Harvard School of Public Health, equipping her with advanced skills in population health research methodologies.
