UAEU receives patent from the Patent Office of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States
His Excellency Dr. Ali Al-Nuaimi, Vice Chancellor of the University, stressed that the first national university is enlightened, with regard to its scientific productions and research contributions, by the directives of the wise leadership, led by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, towards excellence, creativity, and innovation, and by the support and attention of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, with all that contributes positively to the creation of a distinctive creative environment that serves the community and humanity.
Given the harsh environmental conditions in the Arabian Gulf region, such as the high humidity in the atmosphere and the great variation in temperature, which lead to poor quality of materials used in construction, and the erosion of reinforced concrete in buildings. From this perspective, and as one of the industrial research projects at the University; emerged an idea of finding new concrete composition with more resistant to erosion and corrosion than the usual concrete with a high proportion of chloride. Such as the one used in sewage pipes industry and others, as these factors represent the most important sources of degradation of constructional structures and infrastructure. Further advantages for this invention is recycling the industrial wastes and environmental pollutants like sulfur, which are produced from the extraction and refining of petroleum and cement industries. It also process them chemically to be converted into usable products, which reduces the pollution of the environment, rather than getting rid of this waste through burial, not depleting the natural materials used, and preserving public health.
It is noteworthy that the main inventors of this technology is the Professor Abdel-Mohsen Onsy, and Dr. Maisa El Gamal, who conducted extensive experiments on the innovative sulfur concrete, which proved that it has great resistance to corrosion, unlike the ordinary concrete. Such materials are also safe and environmentally friendly, and this kind of concrete is the optimal type for applications in the management and isolation of wastes, barrier systems, and containing, installing, and freezing wastes.
The cement industry is considered one of the development and strategic industries of the developed countries, and it is classified among the heavy and dangerous industries that has environmental and health risks, about which many international environmental systems are worried, as it produces solid pollutants from various stages of production processes, in addition to the amounts of dust emanating from chimneys of cement factories, and gaseous pollutants produced from burning fuel in furnaces, such as carbon dioxide, which is a gas with a major impact on the climate that leads to heating the Earth's atmosphere.
The University noted that, in addition to the GCC Patent, it was also awarded a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (US 8,721,785), and granted patents from the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Japan and the European Patent Office.
