The European Conference of Science Journalism (ECSJ2022) has opened the call for travel grants to attend the conference that will take place in Leiden 10-13 July 2022 (https://ecsj2022.eu) in conjunction with ESOF2022.

The travel grants are funded by EurekAlert!, Elsevier and the European Federation for Science Journalism (EFSJ) thanks to a donation from three among its founding associations – the Swiss SASJ, the French AJSPI and the Italian SWIM – who organised the very successful World Conference of Science Journalists WCSJ2019 in Lausanne through the Alpine Consortium.

“We are planning a conference in person, with a total of around 250 to 300 participants, and we are very grateful to the European Federation and our other supporters, Eurekalert! and Elsevier for their generosity”, said Krijn Soeteman, president of the Dutch association of science journalists VWN, who also heads the organising committee of ECSJ2022. “We hope to have at least 25 travel grants that will be assigned to science journalists through a competitive call”.

The theme of the conference is Investigating Science, and the first keynote speaker announced is Dutch scientist and expert of scientific integrity Elisabeth Bik, who has been exposing many cases of image manipulation and fraud in scientific publications in recent years.

Science journalists who work in a European country (including all countries on the European continent) can apply for a grant of up to 500 euro (for registration fee, travel and accommodation) through the conference website. The instructions are available in the Grant Application page (https://ecsj2022.eu/grants/)  .

An international judging panel will give priority to diverse voices, and those in financial need. Journalists who have other sources of funding, such as their employer’s travel budgets, are invited to pursue those first.

Deadline for travel grant applications is 15 May 2022, 23:59 CET. Panel review is scheduled between 16 and 22 May, applicants are expected to be notified on 23 May 2022.

Anyone who might consider offering travel and accommodation grants is warmly invited to contact us or check the linked supporters outline on the Partnerships page (https://ecsj2022.eu/sponsors/).
