A constrained optimization method generated collision-free waypoints that helped simulated point-mass and wheelchair-type robots overcome local minima in artificial potential field navigation.

Researchers have developed a waypoint-generation method designed to prevent robots using artificial potential field navigation from becoming trapped at local minima. The approach generates intermediate waypoints when a direct route to a target is blocked by obstacles, using constrained optimization to preserve goal-directed motion while requiring each planned segment to maintain obstacle clearance.

Artificial potential field, or APF, methods combine attractive and repulsive forces to guide a robot toward a destination while steering it away from obstacles. Their simplicity and computational efficiency make them useful in robot path planning, but the method has a well-known vulnerability: at certain non-goal configurations, the combined force can become zero. The robot may then stop moving even though it has not reached its target, particularly in cluttered surroundings.

The proposed framework replaces random escape attempts and artificial perturbations with a finite evaluation of candidate intermediate points. For each candidate, the method applies a locally defined reference direction and checks every segment between waypoints for collision. By solving a constrained optimization problem, the system selects collision-free waypoints that move the robot around interfering obstacles without abandoning its overall objective of reaching the target. In this way, the method addresses the local-minima problem through planned intermediate motion rather than relying on unplanned corrective forces.

The researchers evaluated the approach in numerical simulations involving two robotic platforms: a point-mass robot and a wheelchair-type robotic model. Across complex environments, the simulations showed that the generated waypoints resolved local-minima situations, produced collision-free motion, and consistently directed the robots toward their target locations. The authors describe the framework as general and potentially applicable to different robotic systems, although the reported evidence is simulation-based and does not establish performance in physical deployments.
