A monthly-data study found persistent links between crude oil price uncertainty and three Baltic maritime freight indices, with the strongest relationship in dirty tankers.

Crude oil price uncertainty was associated with persistent, scale-dependent movements in maritime freight rates between January 2015 and February 2025, according to an analysis of three Baltic freight indices. The strongest relationship appeared in the dirty-tanker market, while the dry-bulk index showed comparatively weaker dependence. The links were concentrated mainly at medium- and long-term time scales and became more pronounced during periods of heightened oil-market uncertainty.

The research, published in Discover Sustainability on 25 September 2026 as an open-access, peer-reviewed article, examined monthly data connecting the Crude Oil Volatility Index (OVX) with the Baltic Clean Tanker Index (BCTI), the Baltic Dirty Tanker Index (BDTI) and the Baltic Dry Index (BDI). By including indices for clean tankers, dirty tankers and dry-bulk shipping, the study compared how oil-price volatility related to freight-rate behavior in three representative segments of maritime transport.

The empirical framework combined econometric tests with Detrended Cross-Correlation Analysis, or DCCA, and wavelet-based analysis. Across the three freight markets, the results revealed heterogeneous but persistent relationships with the OVX. The BDTI had the strongest relationship, whereas the BDI showed comparatively weaker dependence. Wavelet analysis placed the observed dependence primarily at medium- and long-term scales. More pronounced co-movement also occurred when uncertainty in the oil market was heightened.

These results establish a statistical association, not proof that oil-price uncertainty directly causes freight rates to change. The study is limited to monthly observations from one decade and to three representative Baltic indices; it does not establish whether the same pattern holds for every route, commodity or shipping segment. Within that scope, the findings identify persistent exposure to crude oil price uncertainty as relevant to freight risk management, fuel-efficiency strategies, fleet investment and maritime financial planning. The authors also connect the results to broader implications for sustainable maritime transport and for Sustainable Development Goals 7 and 13.
