										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The way people respond emotionally to a prolonged war may be shaped by a psychological trait measured before the first missile ever flew, according to a new longitudinal study that followed more than 700 Israeli adults from peacetime into the thirteenth month of the Israel–Hamas war. The research, published in Applied Research in Quality of Life, finds that individuals with a strong status-quo bias—a deep-seated preference for keeping things as they are, even when circumstances deteriorate—experienced significantly worse subjective well-being during the conflict than their more change-oriented peers. The study goes further, identifying the mechanism behind this vulnerability: people high in status-quo bias invested markedly less effort in improving disrupted areas of their lives, such as health, work, relationships, and leisure, and that behavioral passivity eroded their emotional resilience over time.</p>
<p>The investigation is unusual in that it exploits a rare natural experiment. In December 2022, roughly ten months before Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, the researchers surveyed 1,423 Israeli adults aged 25 to 66, measuring both their status-quo bias and their baseline subjective well-being. When war erupted, the same participants could be recontacted through the Israeli Midgam Project online panel using internal identifiers. In the sixth week of the fighting, 1,053 of them completed a second survey, and in the thirteenth month of the war, 723 participants completed a third wave. Because well-being was measured before the war began, the researchers could control for pre-existing emotional states and isolate how the bias predicted subsequent adjustment—a far more rigorous design than the cross-sectional snapshots that dominate most disaster psychology.</p>
<p>The status-quo bias measure itself consisted of fifteen statements presented in random order, rated on a five-point agreement scale and averaged after reverse-coding where applicable. The concept, first formalized by Samuelson and Zeckhauser in 1988, describes the tendency of people to stick with existing conditions even when superior alternatives are available. In laboratory settings it appears in choice tasks involving everything from financial decisions to health behavior. But its role in emotional adaptation to real-life crises had, until now, been poorly understood. The research team—Guy Barokas, Hila Hindy Ling, and Arie Sherman of Ruppin Academic Center and Tal Shavit of Ariel University—hypothesized that the bias would function as a dispositional risk factor, pushing people toward what coping theorists call disengagement-oriented coping, characterized by behavioral inertia and reduced effort.</p>
<p>The emotional trajectory of the sample over the war year tells its own story. When the second wave was administered at the beginning of the conflict, positive emotions had decreased and negative emotions had increased, while global life evaluation and the sense that life is meaningful remained relatively stable. By month thirteen, however, even those cognitive anchors of well-being had declined significantly. All differences between the pre-war and thirteen-month measurements were statistically significant, with effect sizes ranging from medium to very large (Cohen&#8217;s d between 0.60 and 2.53). Anxiety and fear were assessed with items adapted from earlier research on terrorism risk perception, including difficulty sleeping, restlessness, hypervigilance, jumpiness, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of being worried, scared, or terrified.</p>
<p>When the researchers ran multivariate linear regressions predicting each wartime well-being outcome from pre-war status-quo bias, controlling for age, gender, relationship status, children, education, religiosity, income, subjective health, evacuation from home, direct war participation, and family members&#8217; war participation, the bias emerged as a significant predictor in all six models. Higher pre-war bias predicted lower global life evaluation (B = -0.585), lower meaning in life (B = -1.009), and fewer positive emotions (B = -0.500), alongside more negative emotions (B = 0.368), greater anxiety (B = 0.256), and greater fear (B = 0.242). In bivariate terms, the correlations were moderate, hovering around r = -0.35 for life evaluation and meaning, and roughly 0.16 for the negative affect measures, with anxiety and fear strongly intercorrelated at r = 0.77.</p>
<p>The central analytical move of the paper was to specify a moderated mediation model grounded in coping theory. Efforts for improvement—an index of how much participants had tried since the war&#8217;s start to improve their health, work, social relationships, and leisure, with high internal consistency (Cronbach&#8217;s α = 0.936)—was entered as a mediator between pre-war status-quo bias and each well-being outcome, while perceived war impact on daily life served as a moderator. The results were clear on the first link of the chain: pre-war status-quo bias was a significant negative predictor of wartime improvement efforts across all models, with standardized coefficients ranging from -0.24 to -0.33. In other words, people who habitually avoided change before the war also systematically failed to take corrective action once their circumstances worsened under fire.</p>
<p>The second link held up as well, at least for the cognitive and positive-affective components of well-being. Effort invested in improvement was positively associated with wartime global life evaluation (β = 0.10), meaning in life (β = 0.17), and positive emotions (β = 0.27), and negatively associated with fear (β = -0.07), though its direct associations with negative emotions and anxiety did not reach conventional significance. Once effort and perceived war impact were included in the models, the direct effects of pre-war status-quo bias on life evaluation, meaning, and emotions were attenuated to non-significance—precisely the signature of mediation. For anxiety and fear, however, the direct paths from the bias remained significant even after accounting for effort, suggesting that the bias harms distress outcomes through two complementary routes: one indirect, via reduced coping effort, and one direct, possibly reflecting heightened helplessness or rumination that the authors flag for future investigation.</p>
<p>Perceived war impact itself was one of the strongest predictors in the entire analysis, associated with sharply lower life evaluation, meaning, and positive emotions, and dramatically higher negative emotions, anxiety (β = 0.46), and fear (β = 0.47). Conditional indirect effects revealed nuance: the pathway from bias through effort to life evaluation became increasingly negative as perceived war impact grew, reaching significance only at moderate and high impact levels, while the indirect effects on meaning and positive emotions were consistently negative and significant across all impact levels. Among the control variables, better subjective health and higher religiosity consistently predicted better wartime well-being across nearly every outcome, while income was positively associated with life evaluation and meaning.</p>
<p>The theoretical significance of the work lies in its bridging of two research traditions that rarely speak to each other: behavioral economics and stress psychology. Status-quo bias has long been linked to loss aversion and the endowment effect, and more recently to lower life satisfaction in peacetime studies. By embedding the bias within the coping framework of Lazarus, Folkman, and Carver, the authors position it as a dispositional antecedent of avoidant coping—much like behavioral disengagement—which conserves short-term mental effort but undermines long-term adaptation. This framing also resolves a paradox in the effort literature. Although classical economic models treat effort as pure cost, psychological work on flow and eudaimonic well-being holds that optimal experience demands strenuous voluntary exertion. The new findings suggest that people high in status-quo bias resolve this paradox in favor of conservation, and pay for it emotionally when the world changes around them.</p>
<p>The practical implications are potentially far-reaching for mental health policy in conflict zones. The authors argue that interventions should move beyond trauma-focused protocols toward population-level strategies that counteract passivity: implementation intentions and commitment devices to overcome decision inertia, public campaigns highlighting the psychological returns of active engagement, and community-based programs offering low-threshold effortful activities such as organized volunteering, group exercise, and skill-building workshops. Such measures, they suggest, would simultaneously rebuild social capital and hedonic resources among those most inclined toward inertia.</p>
<p>The study does carry limitations. The analysis relies on self-report, the sample survived attrition from an initial 1,423 down to 723, and the findings come from a single national context that may not generalize to other conflicts or to more severely traumatized populations. The study was not preregistered, and repeated measurement across three waves may introduce panel-conditioning effects, though the long intervals between waves and the magnitude of the real-world shock reduce this concern. The authors also note that constructs such as sense of coherence, group-based emotions, and political orientation were outside the design and may interact with the mechanisms they identified.</p>
<p>Still, the core message is stark: under prolonged strain, freezing in place exacts a steep emotional price. A decision-making bias documented for decades in laboratory choice tasks turns out to forecast, a year in advance, who will suffer most when the laboratory becomes a warzone—and the currency of that suffering is the effort people fail to make.</p>
