A time-lagged survey of 388 Pakistani SMEs links Industry 4.0 technologies with sustainable performance through implementation and selective government policy support.

A time-lagged survey of 388 small and medium-sized enterprises in Pakistan found positive associations between the use of big data, the Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems and sustainable business performance. The study further identified technology implementation as a mediator linking these Industry 4.0 technologies with performance, while government policy support strengthened some, but not all, of those relationships. The research examined how small and medium-sized enterprises translate digital technology adoption into sustainable business performance.

Its statistical model considered big data, Internet of Things and cyber-physical system adoption alongside technology implementation, government policy support and sustainable business performance. Technology implementation was assessed as a mediating factor, meaning that it accounted for part of the observed relationship between each Industry 4.0 technology and the outcome. Government policy was examined as a moderator that could alter the strength of the technology-performance relationships.

Questionnaire data were gathered through a time-lagged survey design and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. All three technologies were positively associated with sustainable business performance in the sampled Pakistani SMEs. The strongest policy-related findings concerned big data and cyber-physical systems: government policy significantly strengthened their respective relationships with sustainable business performance.

The moderating effect of government policy on the relationship between Internet of Things adoption and sustainable business performance was not statistically significant. These selective results mean that the policy effect reported for one technology should not be generalized to the other two without further evidence. Its statistically significant mediating role supports the study’s interpretation that Industry 4.0 technologies can function as strategic resources whose value depends on implementation capabilities.

The findings do not show that adoption alone is sufficient. They instead indicate that how firms implement the technologies is statistically relevant when explaining the relationship between those systems and sustainable business performance. The supplied research abstract does not identify the specific implementation measures or survey indicators used, so the operational components of implementation cannot be assessed from the available evidence.

Because the evidence comes from a survey rather than a randomized intervention, the results establish statistical relationships within the participating firms, not direct causation. The findings are also bounded to 388 SMEs in Pakistan and to the technologies, mediator, moderator and sustainable-performance outcome assessed in the study. Within those limits, the study links effective technology implementation with sustainable business performance and finds a significant reinforcing role for government policy in the big-data and cyber-physical-system relationships, while leaving the Internet of Things policy interaction statistically insignificant.
