										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the flood-prone plains of North Bihar, one of India&#8217;s most densely populated and socially stratified rural regions, caste remains the organizing grammar of village life. A new study from Surajpur village offers an unusually granular portrait of how that grammar is being rewritten, and sometimes violently enforced, as subordinated groups rise. Researchers Md Abu Tarique, Md Abusaad and Salma Khatoon report in SN Social Sciences that caste conflict in the village is no longer primarily a story of upper-caste domination over everyone below. Instead, the sharpest fault line now runs between dominant Other Backward Classes, or OBCs, and Scheduled Castes, or SCs, a phenomenon the authors describe as intra-subaltern contestation. Their findings carry uncomfortable implications for how scholars and policymakers understand both caste inequality and the social consequences of education in rural India.</p>
<p>The study rests on an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, a structure in which quantitative data are collected first and then interrogated through qualitative fieldwork. The researchers conducted structured household surveys with 100 respondents drawn from the village, embedding the survey in sustained ethnographic observation of everyday interactions across caste lines. They then used binary logistic regression to estimate which individual characteristics predicted the experience of caste-based violence, a statistical technique appropriate when the outcome of interest is dichotomous and the goal is to isolate the independent effect of each predictor. Thematic analysis, following the widely used Braun and Clarke framework, was applied to the ethnographic and interview material to identify recurring patterns of dominance, resistance and negotiation. The authors followed ethical guidelines from the Indian Council of Social Science Research, obtaining informed verbal consent from all participants and protecting confidentiality throughout.</p>
<p>The headline statistical result is striking. Scheduled Caste membership was associated with an odds ratio of 37.21, meaning that, after controlling for other factors, SC respondents were roughly thirty-seven times more likely to report experiencing caste-based violence than others in the sample, a relationship significant at p less than 0.001. Education, meanwhile, told a paradoxical story. Respondents with secondary or higher education faced odds of experiencing violence 7.18 times greater than those with less schooling, also highly significant. On its face, this seems perverse: schooling is conventionally understood as protective, empowering, and integrative. But the qualitative data, the authors argue, reveal why education can amplify exposure to violence even as it equips members of oppressed groups to resist it.</p>
<p>The explanation lies in what education changes about social behavior. For Scheduled Caste villagers, schooling builds what the authors call caste consciousness, an awareness of structural injustice and a vocabulary for naming it. Educated SC residents are more likely to question discriminatory practices, to refuse demeaning forms of address, to assert claims to public resources, and to participate in political mobilization. Each of these acts challenges the local status hierarchy that dominant OBC groups have long taken for granted. In a setting where everyday deference functions as a form of social insurance, its withdrawal is treated as provocation. Education, in other words, does not merely open doors; it also raises the visibility and perceived audacity of those walking through them, and dominant groups respond with intimidation and violence.</p>
<p>This is the study&#8217;s central empirical paradox: education simultaneously facilitates resistance among Scheduled Castes and increases their exposure to violent caste-based discrimination. The finding resonates with a long line of scholarship on the limits of schooling as an equalizer in caste societies. Research on Dalit children&#8217;s schooling in India has documented persistent discrimination inside classrooms and labor markets alike, and work on rural Uttar Pradesh has shown how education reproduces difference as often as it dissolves it. What the Bihar study adds is quantitative precision about the violent dimension of that reproduction. Education is not failing Scheduled Castes because it does nothing; it is implicated in violence precisely because it changes what SC villagers do and demand.</p>
<p>Theoretical framing matters to how the authors interpret these dynamics. They draw on James Scott&#8217;s account of domination and the arts of resistance, which distinguishes between public deference and the hidden transcripts of the subordinated. In Surajpur, the researchers suggest, education and political mobilization have begun to move hidden transcripts into public view, converting quiet resentment into open contestation. They also invoke Pierre Bourdieu&#8217;s concept of cultural capital to explain how credentials function as claims to dignity, and Nancy Fraser&#8217;s distinction between recognition and redistribution to frame caste conflict as a struggle over both material resources and social standing. Classical sociological treatments of caste, from Srinivas and Dumont to more recent work by Gopal Guru and Sukhadeo Thorat, supply the backdrop against which the intra-subaltern turn is measured.</p>
<p>That turn is the study&#8217;s chief contribution to caste sociology. Most existing research emphasizes upper-caste dominance, reflecting the historical architecture of the varna hierarchy and the classic village-studies tradition. But as land reforms, electoral reservations, and the political rise of backward castes documented by scholars such as Christophe Jaffrelot and Jeffrey Witsoe have redistributed power in the north Indian countryside, upper castes in many villages have receded from the front line of confrontation. Dominant OBC landholding groups now stand between the old elite and the Scheduled Castes, and conflicts over wages, water, land, honor and political representation increasingly play out between these two subordinated blocs. The Bihar study provides empirical evidence that this intra-subaltern conflict is not incidental but structured, measurable and severe.</p>
<p>The findings also speak to a broader debate about whether democratic institutions are softening caste. India&#8217;s constitutional framework formally abolishes untouchability and guarantees reserved political representation for Scheduled Castes, and Bihar has been a crucible of backward-caste political mobilization for decades. Yet the persistence of violence, concentrated so heavily on SC residents and on educated SC residents in particular, suggests that formal equality has not dismantled informal hierarchy. Instead, democratic openings appear to have intensified local contestation, as expanded rights collide with entrenched local power. The authors read their results as evidence that caste-based inequality persists within contemporary democratic and institutional structures, reshaped rather than erased by them. Political participation and education have given Scheduled Castes tools of resistance, but those tools have raised the stakes of every encounter.</p>
<p>Methodologically, the study illustrates both the power and the limits of village-level mixed-methods research. A single village survey of 100 households cannot by itself establish regional or national patterns, and the authors are careful to present Surajpur as a case study rather than a representative sample. The very large odds ratio for SC membership should be read in context: it reflects a social setting in which caste identity overwhelmingly organizes the risk of violence, not a laboratory-isolated causal effect. Still, the convergence between the regression results and the ethnographic record is the design&#8217;s strength. The numbers identify who is at risk; the fieldwork explains why schooling paradoxically deepens that risk while strengthening the capacity to resist it.</p>
<p>The broader implications are sobering and generative at once. For policy, the study suggests that educational expansion among historically oppressed groups must be paired with protections against the retaliation it can provoke, from effective enforcement of anti-atrocity legislation to vigilant local administration. For social science, it underscores that India&#8217;s caste order cannot be understood as a single vertical ladder; it is a shifting field of competing power blocs in which yesterday&#8217;s oppressors may be replaced by groups once counted among the oppressed. As education and political mobilization continue to reshape rural power relations, the experience of villages like Surajpur offers an early warning about the turbulent, contested path between inherited hierarchy and genuine equality.</p>

New research from the University of Seville offers one of the most detailed portraits yet of how extreme heat interacts with poverty, age, and housing quality to create pockets of acute vulnerability within a single Mediterranean city. The study, published in the journal Regional Environmental Change, introduces a decision-making framework that combines high-resolution nighttime microclimate simulations with building-by-building cadastral records and census data, allowing urban planners to see precisely where the deadliest combinations of heat and social fragility converge.</p>
<p>Spain has emerged as one of the European regions most severely affected by intensifying heat extremes, and Seville—located in the Guadalquivir Valley, one of the hottest urban corridors on the continent—sits at the sharp end of this trend. Yet, despite the severity of its thermal conditions, the city has historically lacked the kind of granular, urban-scale vulnerability analysis needed to target adaptation resources where they matter most. The research team, led by Julia Díaz-Borrego together with Alicia Alonso and Rocío Escandón, set out to close that gap by treating heat vulnerability not as a single environmental measurement but as the product of multiple overlapping factors spanning climate, buildings, and human demographics.</p>
<p>Technically, the framework begins with climate data drawn from the European Climate Assessment and Dataset project, using daily maximum temperatures recorded at the Seville airport meteorological station between 2008 and 2017. Following the criteria of the Spanish State Meteorological Agency, the researchers defined a heat wave as an episode lasting at least three consecutive days in which at least ten percent of monitoring stations record maximum temperatures above the 95th percentile of the July and August series from 1971 to 2000. From the decade of observations, three particularly severe events stood out: the August 2012 heat wave, the June 2017 event, and another episode in August 2017. These three served as the critical case studies for understanding how the city behaves at the extremes of its thermal range.</p>
<p>For each of these events, the team examined two linked indicators: the urban heat island effect, which describes how urban areas retain and generate more heat than surrounding rural land, and a metric known as the hot night excess, which captures how much nighttime temperatures exceed normal thresholds. The nighttime focus is deliberate and scientifically important. A growing body of epidemiological research, including studies on mortality across Southern Europe, has shown that hot nights are strongly associated with excess deaths, because they deny the human body the chance to recover from daytime heat stress. Nocturnal conditions, rather than daytime maxima alone, are increasingly recognized as the decisive variable in heat-related health outcomes.</p>
<p>The spatial analysis revealed a consistent pattern: the eastern third of Seville repeatedly registered the highest levels of thermal stress during all three heat waves, a result the researchers attribute to a combination of atmospheric and geographic factors specific to the city&#8217;s layout. During the August 2012 event, the hot night excess index tracked a marked intensification of the urban heat island within the consolidated urban fabric compared with rural surroundings. In June 2017, the correlation between the two indicators weakened, yet temperatures still rose considerably and the urban heat island intensified within city limits, with the eastern districts again most affected. The August 2017 episode showed fluctuating island patterns, but geography continued to concentrate the worst conditions in the same eastern zone.</p>
<p>What elevates the study beyond conventional heat mapping is its integration of microclimate simulation with socioeconomic and building-level data. Rather than relying solely on satellite-derived land surface temperatures, which often struggle to capture nighttime urban dynamics, the researchers incorporated high-resolution nocturnal microclimatic simulations capable of resolving street-level thermal behavior. Onto this thermal layer they overlaid building-scale cadastral information and census data measuring energy poverty—a concept describing households unable to afford adequate cooling or heating—and broader sociodemographic characteristics such as income, age structure, and housing conditions. The result is a multidimensional vulnerability index whose geography can be inspected at the scale of individual blocks.</p>
<p>The central finding is striking in its simplicity: thermal exposure and vulnerability are not the same thing. Although high temperatures were widely distributed across Seville&#8217;s consolidated urban areas, the researchers found that vulnerability was far from homogeneous, because socioeconomic and demographic conditions play a decisive role in differentiating levels of risk. Districts with nearly identical thermal profiles exhibited significantly different vulnerability outcomes depending on residents&#8217; income, the age composition of the population, and the physical quality of the housing stock. Older residents living in poorly insulated, energy-inefficient dwellings in low-income neighborhoods face compounding risks that wealthier districts exposed to the same temperatures simply do not experience, particularly when air conditioning is unaffordable to run.</p>
<p>Just as important as the index itself is the framework&#8217;s insistence on visual, cartographic communication. The authors place particular emphasis on the graphical representation of results, producing clear and accessible maps that reveal spatial patterns and pinpoint critical hotspots within the urban fabric. This is not a cosmetic choice. Complex multilayered analyses of climate and social data frequently remain locked in technical reports that municipal decision-makers cannot easily interpret. By translating the framework&#8217;s outputs into intuitive visual spatial analysis, the researchers demonstrate a practical route for communicating vulnerability patterns to planners, public health officials, and elected representatives who must ultimately decide where scarce adaptation funds are spent.</p>
<p>The implications reach well beyond Seville. Southern European cities are warming rapidly, and projections of heat-attributable mortality in Spain through mid-century and beyond suggest a growing public health burden unless cities adapt. Frameworks like this one provide the evidence base for prioritizing interventions—whether tree canopy expansion, reflective roofing, retrofitting social housing, or targeted cooling-center placement—in the neighborhoods where they will save the most lives. By proving that similar thermal exposure can mask dramatically different vulnerability profiles, the study delivers a clear message to urban governments across the Mediterranean: climate resilience strategies that ignore socioeconomic reality will protect the wrong places. Equitable, data-driven targeting, the researchers argue, is the only path to climate-resilient cities that protect all of their residents, not merely the most fortunate ones.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Child survival in Cameroon is not a matter of chance distributed evenly across the population, according to a new study that applies machine learning to two decades of demographic survey data. Researchers Aoudou Njingouo Mounchingam and Vissého Adjiwanou, publishing in SSM &#8211; Population Health, have shown that the country&#8217;s under-five mortality is organized into sharply differentiated empirical strata of vulnerability, with children in the highest-risk group facing a cumulative probability of dying before age five of 27.8 percent, compared with just 2.1 percent among children in the lowest-risk stratum. The gap, more than thirteenfold, is among the starkest illustrations yet of how social disadvantage accumulates to shape whether a child lives or dies in early childhood.</p>
<p>The study draws on pooled data from the 2011 Demographic and Health Survey-Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey and the 2018 Demographic and Health Survey, two nationally representative household surveys conducted by Cameroon&#8217;s National Institute of Statistics in partnership with international agencies. Together, the surveys cover 21,465 children born in the five years preceding each wave, of whom 1,646, or 7.46 percent, died before reaching their fifth birthday. Because each survey records complete birth histories, the researchers were able to construct time-to-event measures of child survival, treating children who died as events and those still alive at the time of interview as right-censored observations.</p>
<p>What sets the analysis apart is its methodological approach. Most research on child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa relies on regression models that estimate the average effect of each individual predictor, such as maternal education or birth interval, while holding other factors constant. The authors argue that such variable-centered strategies obscure the reality that vulnerability rarely stems from a single adverse characteristic. Instead, mortality risk emerges from the accumulation of reproductive constraints, limited parental resources, restricted access to health services, and adverse community environments that cluster together within particular households and communities.</p>
<p>To capture these configurations, the researchers turned to a random survival forest, a machine learning method that extends tree-based ensembles to right-censored survival data. Unlike the conventional Cox proportional hazards model, which assumes that relative risks between individuals remain constant over time and that covariate effects are linear and additive, the random survival forest makes no such assumptions. The choice was not merely stylistic. Tests based on Schoenfeld residuals revealed widespread and statistically significant violations of the proportional hazards assumption in the Cox benchmark model, with a global test statistic of 172.35 and a p-value below 0.001, indicating that the relative contribution of risk factors changes substantially over the course of early childhood.</p>
<p>The random survival forest produced a continuous risk score for each child, summarizing the estimated probability of death before 59 months. When the researchers ranked children along this gradient and partitioned them into strata, three distinct groups emerged. Children in the low-risk stratum, slightly more than half of the sample, experienced a cumulative mortality of just 2.1 percent. The intermediate-risk stratum, representing roughly a quarter of children, faced a mortality of 6.3 percent. The high-risk stratum, also about a quarter of the sample, accounted for a disproportionate share of deaths, with 1,210 of the 1,646 observed deaths and a cumulative mortality of 27.8 percent. Kaplan-Meier survival curves confirmed a clear and monotonic separation of trajectories, with differences emerging within the first months of life and persisting throughout the first five years.</p>
<p>The social composition of each stratum proved internally coherent and revealing. Children in the low-risk stratum were predominantly embedded in advantaged contexts, characterized by overrepresentation of higher maternal and paternal education, greater maternal media exposure, wealthier households, urban residence, higher birth weight, more antenatal care visits, and greater maternal decision-making autonomy. The intermediate-risk stratum presented a more paradoxical picture: despite favorable educational and informational resources, these children were disproportionately exposed to low birth weight, short birth intervals, young motherhood, and missed antenatal care, illustrating that social resources alone cannot fully offset early-life biological vulnerabilities.</p>
<p>The high-risk stratum concentrated disadvantage across every dimension the researchers measured. Low birth weight appeared at markedly higher levels than in the intermediate group, alongside strong overrepresentation of short preceding birth intervals reflecting closely spaced fertility. Both mothers and partners in this group were more likely to have no formal education, mothers were disproportionately likely to receive no antenatal care and to deliver at home rather than in health facilities, and women without any household decision-making autonomy were overrepresented. The authors describe this as a configuration of compounded vulnerability, in which biological risk factors, constrained reproductive conditions, and entrenched social disadvantage reinforce one another.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most sobering finding concerns temporal persistence. Comparing the 2011 and 2018 survey waves, the researchers found that although overall under-five mortality in Cameroon declined from 144 to 80 deaths per 1,000 live births between 2004 and 2018, the social structuring of vulnerability remained remarkably stable. High-risk strata in both waves were characterized by the same accumulation of reproductive, educational, and healthcare disadvantages, while low-risk strata concentrated protective resources. Progress in child survival, in other words, occurred without fundamentally altering the distribution of mortality risk across social groups, raising questions about whether aggregate improvements mask persistent inequity.</p>
<p>The findings carry significant implications for public health policy, both in Cameroon and across sub-Saharan Africa, a region that accounts for nearly half of the global burden of under-five mortality despite representing only about 17 percent of the world&#8217;s population. In 2023, approximately 4.8 million children worldwide died before their fifth birthday, mostly from preventable causes, and progress toward the Sustainable Development Goal target of 25 deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030 remains far off track in Cameroon, where the 2018 level stood at 80 deaths per 1,000 live births. The study suggests that interventions targeting individual risk factors in isolation may be insufficient; instead, programs should address the concentration of disadvantages within identifiable high-risk population strata through integrated maternal and child health approaches.</p>
<p>The authors are careful to note the limitations of their approach. The strata are empirical groupings along a continuous risk gradient, not latent classes or causal typologies, and should be interpreted as descriptive representations of cumulative vulnerability rather than distinct causal entities. The analysis also relies on retrospective birth histories, which may be subject to recall bias, particularly for early neonatal deaths that are heavily concentrated in the high-risk stratum. Nevertheless, the study demonstrates that machine learning methods, used as exploratory tools rather than black-box predictors, can make mortality heterogeneity empirically observable in ways that complement conventional regression. Future research, the authors suggest, could map the spatial distribution of vulnerability strata using survey cluster coordinates, examine transitions between strata over time with longitudinal data, and apply similar person-centered survival approaches to other health outcomes and populations across the region.</p>

The essay, “Money, power and gift: a very short treatise on capital” by John Milbank, emeritus-linked scholar based at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Nottingham, was published open access on 6 March 2026 in the International Review of Economics, appearing as Volume 73, article number 10. Written as a single-author research article with no datasets or empirical analysis, it is a work of intellectual synthesis spanning the history of economic thought, sociology and theology, and it closes with concrete proposals ranging from local currencies to shared-risk banking.</p>
<p>Milbank begins from what he calls capitalism’s “paradoxical oscillation between stasis and flow.” The modern market economy, he writes, must constantly increase its static accumulation of wealth while simultaneously risking that accumulation through continuous circulation. He illustrates this with two contrasting images: the privileged economic enclave such as the City of London, a bounded physical site where the normal writ of the state scarcely runs, and the ceaseless day-and-night circulation of global transport, both real and virtual. Flows require hubs, but flows alone secure the power and permanence of the hubs—much as medieval castles housed troops, yet depended on those troops’ forays for their own security.</p>
<p>From this tension the paper derives a threefold account of what capital consists in. First is the “geographic” ownership of terrain and equipment, which in modernity has become more absolute because it is decoupled from the relationships between people that once delimited ownership through conditional obligation. Second is the “mathematical” ownership of money in abstracted forms such as shares and dividends. Third—and most polemically—is what Milbank describes as the effective ownership of people. Although slavery has been commuted into wage and salary dependency supplemented by welfare, he argues that for the vast majority who own few assets, a mode of semi-serfdom persists: people have been “capitalised,” treated as economic resources rather than as spiritual creatures or citizens, stored in precariously owned housing and constantly retrained and redeployed lest they escape into what he calls enclaves of neo-primitive anarchy.</p>
<p>The paper’s central theoretical move comes in its treatment of money. Against the classical picture—shared, Milbank argues, even by Marx—of money as a neutral mirror or representation of exchange value generated by labour, he aligns himself with a minority tradition in the sociological and Keynesian camps, drawing on eighteenth-century figures such as George Berkeley and Sir James Steuart and on modern writers including Philip Grierson and Geoffrey Ingham. On this “unit of account” view, money is before all else the attribution of an abstract, free-floating quantity of number to people: a register of credit and debt relationships, and therefore of unequal power and ultimately coercion. This tradition is sometimes called the “Cambridge” theory of money in the paper.</p>
<p>It is this credit–debt register, Milbank contends, that makes financialisation primary rather than secondary to capitalism. The conversion of people into capital is not only a matter of exploiting their labour or their consumer desires; it is the reduction of persons to docketed numbers standing in relation to finance capital as borrowers and lenders, to the state as taxpayers, and to landed capital as rent payers—a nexus in which financial and landed capital secure each other, and whose instability was exposed by the 2008 financial crash. Historically, he argues, the decisive “shift at the top” was not the creation of a wage-earning class at the bottom, which was only partial in early modern England and in proto-factory islands of Italy and the Netherlands, but the emergence from around 1300 onwards—and at a new pitch in eighteenth-century Britain around the Bank of England—of a complex relationship between extended state debt, private banks and the tax-paying landed class. Banks began to create money out of nothing through speculative loans backed by central banks and Crown debt, which in turn was underwritten by the tax returns that such speculative investment itself generated.</p>
<p>On this reading, contemporary phenomena that look like capitalist decline are nothing of the sort. Milbank invokes Robert Brenner and others on slowing profits, rentiership and the shift to services, but insists that capitalism has never been interested in physical wealth, innovation or even profit in isolation from class domination. A quasi-feudal, “vectoral” extraction of surplus information is not an anomaly but the revelation of capitalism’s financial core, which from its English Whig outset was about maintaining the power of a political, banking and landed elite. He even suggests this reframes populism: rather than an aberration beside class struggle, populism is the assertion of petty producers and workers against elite financiers, as with the Trump constituency in the United States or the Peronist regime in Argentina, undone by capital flight and consequent inflation.</p>
<p>Yet the paper does not rest in this grim diagnosis. Milbank notes that the same German sociologists and Cambridge theorists who established money’s debt-based origins—Georg Simmel, Max Weber, Grierson, Ingham—still, in his view, share one classical assumption: that earlier tribal economies were barter economies. Against this he appeals to Marcel Mauss’s account of gift-exchange, in which economic exchange is also a symbolic mutual binding, carrying a triple obligation to give, receive and give again. Even David Graeber, who invoked the gift, is criticised for reducing it to spontaneous communist sharing and treating the “indebted” dimension of gift-exchange—the owing of a counter-gift—as an anachronistic economistic projection on Mauss’s part, when Milbank takes that dimension to be empirically well attested and inseparable from gift-exchange’s ritual symbolism.</p>
<p>Reading money through the gift allows the paper to mediate the old debate between money as commodity and money as unit of account. Unlike a bartered object, a gift is at once a thing, a value, and a participatory stand-in for the giver—quasi-personal, as persons themselves can be exchanged as gifts in marriage. Very early token money, in Mauss’s account, arose in symbolic and religious contexts and was both a representative commodity and a recorder of social credit and debt, but debt in that context was largely positive and binding. Drawing on Lewis Hyde, Milbank observes that a gift creates a relationship one did not already have and increases the giver’s power—strangely akin to a modern bank inventing money through credit it does not really possess. Token gifts were even “usurious” in an old sense: through circulation a gift’s value increased, part of which returned to the original giver, though the increase could itself be passed on further. In Latin, usura long meant precisely this positive increase of things through use—the barley seed that grows into a bushel, the ancestral ring that acquires meaning. Modern usury, by contrast, lets the increase accrue only through foreclosure and repossession.</p>
<p>This yields the paper’s most striking reinterpretation: modern financialised capitalism is a parody of gift-exchange, not an escape from it. Mauss’s “total social fact”—the inescapable obligation of reciprocity—cannot be exited, so late capitalism remains within it, distorted. Its reduction of money to pure credit returns money, perversely, to direct power relations between people; its insertion of debt into every corner of life binds persons together, however etiolatedly; and its fiat money, dependent wholly on trust, promotes once more the truth that human beings endlessly create meanings and things out of nothing. Even paying a restaurant bill, Milbank suggests, is a constrained counter-gift, and the possibility of general defaulting reveals an element of free spontaneity in everyday consent.</p>
<p>From here the paper turns to policy and what Milbank calls the choice between the “infinite line” and the “infinite spiral.” The infinite line is the straight, asymmetrical accumulation of abstract capital by a few; the spiral is infinitisation bent back into regional, national or local circuits of mutual support, where gain is endlessly passed on under a mutual-insurance principle and debt guarantees a promised reversal into credit. Examples he offers include strictly local currencies not exchangeable beyond certain limits, and rethought banks and building societies in which borrowing is reconceived as taking shares in ventures, with the bank sharing in the risk of lending—a mode of non-usurious investment. He cites precedents ranging from leaving the gold standard, which enabled the New Deal and the Keynesian era, to mutual-protective arrangements like Bretton Woods. Conversely, he argues that the infinite line must police its own limits—the gold standard, then the dollar-gold link, then the dollar, euro and yen, and today international bankers’ demands for fiscal prudence—to prevent illegitimate exits into the spiral. He points to the rapid fall of British Prime Minister Liz Truss as a dramatic illustration of finance’s power over democratic economic choices, and to more than five thousand special economic zones worldwide, joined by deregulating states such as Javier Milei’s Argentina and Donald Trump’s America, as castellated enclaves hollowing out the national “spirals.”</p>
<p>The limitations of the piece are evident and, in a sense, acknowledged: it is a philosophical and historical essay, not an empirical study, and its prescriptions are sketched rather than modelled. Milbank concedes there is no inevitable good synthesis; things can grow darker, with land rendered uninhabitable and human capacities—knowing, willing, being able, in the triad he borrows from Tommaso Campanella—eroded. He also notes that a genuinely reforming British government would likely have to compromise with current global financial circumstances. The proposed “new sort of socio-political action” is candidly described as yet to be invented.</p>
<p>Still, the implications are considerable. If money’s anarchic, created quality can be interfused with social, ethical and religious value in spiralling, gift-exchanging forms, then the contemporary dominance of debtor–creditor relations unmoored from production might be reinfused with generosity, with all lending becoming real investment in physical, cultural and personal processes. Milbank ends on a deliberately expansive note: ours is not, as many suppose, an age of rediscovered limits but of the infinitely open—renewable energy replacing exhaustible fuels, money freed from gold—and this infinity offers either a Faustian power for elites, as Goethe’s Faust Part Two intimated through the creation of paper money, or an “infinite-finite spiral” of reciprocal recognition and encouragement. His final claim is that only such a spiral, not the infinite line of consolidation and extraction, can be forever sustainable—an argument likely to provoke economists, though one grounded, unusually, in theology, gift theory and the long history of money itself.</p>
