Simulations and reanalysis data indicate that 4–6°C of warming since the Last Glacial Maximum enlarged the area of negative-PDO drying by 160% in East Asia and 57% in North America.

A climate-model and observational analysis reports that warming of 4–6°C since the Last Glacial Maximum has amplified the drying associated with a negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), increasing the area affected by suppressed spring precipitation by 160% in East Asia and 57% in North America. The study links these changes to shifts in the positions of subtropical troughs, atmospheric features that the authors describe as regulators of rainfall.

The researchers combined reanalysis data with simulations representing the present day and the Last Glacial Maximum. Their analysis indicates that PDO regime shifts regulate spring precipitation by changing where subtropical troughs sit and altering the associated wind patterns. The results therefore provide a proposed mechanism connecting decadal climate variability, regional moisture transport and drought extent, rather than showing that the PDO alone causes every change in rainfall.

During a negative PDO phase, the India-Burma trough deepens and the base of its circulation shifts about 1,330 km equatorward. This configuration produces northeasterly anomalies east of the trough, weakening the transport of moisture into East Asia and suppressing precipitation. At the same time, the North American subtropical trough becomes shallower and its base moves about 560 km poleward, encouraging ridge development that reduces precipitation in the water-stressed western part of North America.

The comparison between Last Glacial Maximum and present-day simulations suggests that subsequent warming has enlarged the geographic footprint of drying linked to negative-PDO conditions. The reported 160% and 57% increases refer specifically to affected area under the study’s negative-PDO drying effect; they are not estimates of total regional drought area or direct measurements of future drought risk. The simulations represent a warming interval similar in magnitude to that projected for this century, offering a basis for assessing how PDO-related circulation changes may interact with a substantially warmer climate.
