Transient magnetic-field pulses deterministically nucleate isolated hopfions or coexistence states in engineered cylindrical magnetic nanopillars.

Researchers have demonstrated a deterministic mechanism for nucleating magnetic hopfions in cylindrical nanopillars with transient magnetic-field pulses. The study, published in Scientific Reports in 2026, uses a chiral magnetic cylinder with engineered surface uniaxial anisotropy to trigger non-equilibrium magnetization dynamics. After the field pulse ends, the nanopillar relaxes into different topologically protected energy minima depending on the pulse amplitude.

At the appropriate amplitude, the system stabilizes an isolated hopfion, a three-dimensional topological magnetic texture. Other pulse amplitudes produce states in which hopfions coexist with other three-dimensional solitons, showing that the pulse can influence which final magnetic configuration emerges. The central result is that magnetic-field pulses can initiate and control the formation of hopfions in the engineered cylindrical system.

The reported work is a controlled materials-physics demonstration involving engineered chiral cylindrical nanopillars and transient field pulses. The authors describe the result as a framework for manipulating three-dimensional topological textures and as a contribution to understanding three-dimensional nanomagnetism.
