The study, led by Namık Kemal Haspolat and colleagues at Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University together with Muharrem Koç of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, synthesized 35 empirical studies conducted in Türkiye, covering 1,534 participants aged 4 to 17. The findings offer one of the most detailed statistical portraits yet of how anti-bullying programs perform in a culturally specific context, and they arrive at a moment when educators worldwide are searching for evidence about which approaches genuinely change student behavior.</p>
<p>The research team used a random-effects model, the standard statistical framework for combining results across studies that differ in design, samples, and settings. This approach treats the true effect of interventions as varying from study to study rather than assuming a single universal value, which is essential when pooling trials that range from kindergarten aggression-prevention lessons to web-based cyberbullying programs for adolescents. The pooled results showed that intervention programs were associated with a reduction in bullying perpetration with an effect size of 0.78, and a reduction in victimization with an effect size of 0.74. In behavioral research, effect sizes of this magnitude are generally considered moderate to large, suggesting that the programs did not merely nudge attitudes but were linked to substantial changes in reported behavior.</p>
<p>Equally striking were the secondary outcomes. Programs improved participants&#8217; social skills with an effect size of 0.62 and boosted well-being with an effect size of 0.83, the largest effect in the analysis. This pattern supports a growing consensus in developmental science that effective anti-bullying work is not simply about punishing aggressors or warning victims. Instead, the most successful interventions build positive capacities—empathy, assertiveness, conflict resolution, emotional regulation—that displace aggressive dynamics before they take hold. Many of the included studies drew on cognitive behavioral therapy, empathy training, creative drama, peer support structures, and human-values education, reflecting the diverse theoretical traditions that Turkish researchers have adapted to their school system.</p>
<p>The authors were careful to flag an important statistical caveat: the effects varied considerably across studies, a phenomenon known as between-study heterogeneity. When heterogeneity is high, pooled estimates should be read as averages of a diverse landscape rather than as a single reliable prediction for any given school. To probe that variation, the team conducted exploratory moderator analyses, examining whether effect sizes differed systematically by characteristics such as educational level, participant type, and theoretical background. For bullying perpetration, effects were associated with educational level and participant type; for victimization, effects were associated with the theoretical background of the program. However, the researchers urged caution, noting that some subgroups contained few studies and that moderators were examined in separate models rather than simultaneously, which limits how confidently these patterns can be generalized.</p>
<p>One of the more practically useful findings emerged from exploratory univariable meta-regression analyses: session duration was associated with bullying effect sizes, whereas the number of sessions was not. In other words, what seemed to matter was how long students spent in each intervention session, not simply how many sessions were scheduled. This distinction carries real implications for program design. A school might assume that spreading a curriculum across many brief meetings is sufficient, but the data hint that sustained, in-depth engagement within each session may be the active ingredient. The finding aligns with mechanistic accounts of behavior change, which suggest that skills such as empathy and self-regulation require enough practice time within a session to consolidate.</p>
<p>The Turkish context makes the study particularly valuable for the international literature. Global meta-analyses, including influential syntheses by Farrington and Ttofi and updated reviews by Gaffney and colleagues, have established that school-based anti-bullying programs work on average, but questions persist about whether findings from Finland&#8217;s KiVa program, Australia&#8217;s Friendly Schools initiative, or Italy&#8217;s No Trap! model transfer to other educational cultures. Türkiye presents a distinctive case: a large, centralized education system overseen by the Ministry of National Education, rising policy attention to peer bullying, and a research literature that has expanded rapidly over the past decade. By quantifying effects specifically within this system, the new analysis provides evidence that anti-bullying strategies can succeed outside the Western contexts where most evaluations have historically been conducted.</p>
<p>The scope of the included studies is itself notable. Participants ranged from preschool children as young as four to adolescents of seventeen, and the interventions spanned traditional bullying and cyberbullying alike. Some programs targeted gifted students, children with specific learning difficulties, and refugee children under temporary protection, underscoring that bullying risk is not evenly distributed and that tailored approaches may be needed for vulnerable groups. Others tested delivery innovations, from drama-based sensitivity training to web-based psychoeducation grounded in cognitive behavioral principles. This breadth allowed the meta-analysis to speak to a question that single trials cannot: whether the anti-bullying enterprise, taken as a whole, is producing consistent benefits across ages, formats, and populations within one national setting.</p>
<p>The authors emphasize that their results underscore the importance of developing comprehensive, theoretically informed, and culturally responsive anti-bullying strategies. The moderator findings about theoretical background suggest that the conceptual engine of a program—whether it targets cognitions, emotions, values, or peer group dynamics—may shape how well it reduces victimization, even if the analysis cannot yet pinpoint which theory wins. The researchers also frame their work as informing adaptation beyond Türkiye: by identifying potential mechanisms, such as extended session duration, and boundary conditions, such as educational level, the study offers a roadmap for practitioners elsewhere who must decide whether and how to import or adapt programs designed in another cultural milieu.</p>
<p>Limitations remain, and the authors are transparent about them. The moderator analyses were exploratory, some categories rested on a small number of studies, and the high heterogeneity means that individual programs will vary in effectiveness. The meta-analysis also relied on previously published studies, which may themselves differ in methodological rigor. Still, the headline conclusion is difficult to dismiss: across dozens of trials and more than 1,500 children and adolescents, school-based interventions in Türkiye were consistently associated with less bullying, less victimization, better social skills, and greater well-being. The findings, published as an open-access research article in BMC Psychology, suggest that self-esteem functions as a critical psychological resource that converts positive parenting into durable academic well-being over the turbulent years of early adolescence. The research, conducted by Su Jeong Yang and Mina Park of the College of Nursing at Gumi University, followed more than 1,500 young people across three annual waves of data collection, offering one of the clearest longitudinal pictures yet of how family environment and self-perception interact to influence how teenagers experience their academic lives.</p>
<p>The study drew on a nationally representative sample of 1,534 early adolescents, 52 percent of whom were girls and 48 percent boys, all aged between 12 and 14 years at the start of the observation period. Parenting attitudes were assessed with the Parents as Social Context Questionnaire for Korean Adolescents, a scale rooted in self-determination theory that captures the degree to which parents provide warmth, structure, and autonomy support rather than coercion or coldness. Self-esteem, the putative mediator at the heart of the study, was measured with established scales of global self-worth, while academic satisfaction captured how content students felt with their own scholastic performance and school experience. The secondary analysis of the fully anonymized public dataset was approved by the Institutional Review Board of the Ministry of Health and Welfare of the Republic of Korea, and because the data had been anonymized before release, individual informed consent was not required for the analysis itself.</p>

Latent growth modeling allowed the researchers to estimate each adolescent&#8217;s initial level of self-esteem and academic satisfaction and the rate at which these changed across the three survey waves. By combining the two approaches, the researchers could examine both the slow shape of development and the faster causal-style sequencing of influences from year to year, a level of analytical rigor that few studies of parenting and academic outcomes achieve.</p>
<p>The results paint a coherent and somewhat surprising picture. Positive parenting attitudes were robustly associated with higher levels of self-esteem and, crucially, with more favorable trajectories of self-esteem growth across adolescence. In other words, adolescents whose parents displayed warmth, support, and appropriate structure not only felt better about themselves at any given moment but also climbed more steadily in self-worth over the three-year window. In turn, adolescents who began the study with higher self-esteem went on to experience more favorable trajectories of academic satisfaction in the years that followed. The emotional foundation laid early appeared to pay dividends in how students evaluated their school lives as they matured through the middle-school years.</p>
<p>Perhaps the most striking result, however, is what the researchers did not find. When they tested for direct longitudinal effects of parenting attitudes on academic satisfaction, the pathways were statistically nonsignificant. Parenting did not, by itself, predict changes in academic satisfaction over time. Yet the indirect pathways, in which parenting attitudes shaped self-esteem and self-esteem in turn shaped academic satisfaction, were statistically significant. This pattern is the statistical signature of full mediation: the influence of parenting on academic outcomes operates almost entirely through the adolescent&#8217;s internal emotional resources rather than through any direct external channel. For anyone raised on the intuitive idea that involved parents simply produce happier students, the finding is a genuine reframing. Parents matter, but they matter by building the child&#8217;s inner scaffolding, not by directly propping up academic feelings.</p>
<p>The theoretical implications extend well beyond South Korea. Adolescence is widely recognized as a key developmental stage in which academic identity and emotional well-being crystallize, and the study confirms that the two processes are intertwined through self-evaluative mechanisms. Self-esteem appears to act as what psychologists sometimes call an emotional resource: a reservoir of self-worth that students draw upon when interpreting academic setbacks, evaluating their progress, and sustaining motivation. When parenting is warm and structuring, that reservoir fills; when it is not, the reservoir runs low, and academic satisfaction suffers downstream regardless of parental involvement in school matters per se. The finding aligns with self-determination theory&#8217;s prediction that need-supportive parenting nourishes internal resources, which then generalize across life domains including school.</p>
<p>The practical stakes are considerable in a country known for intense educational competition and persistent concerns about adolescent stress. If self-esteem is the conduit through which parenting influences academic satisfaction, then interventions aimed at academic well-being should not stop at study skills, tutoring, or direct academic support. They should also cultivate positive parenting attitudes at home and deliberately strengthen adolescents&#8217; self-esteem, whether through school-based programs, family counseling, or public health initiatives. The authors argue that programs supporting academic well-being may benefit from fostering positive parenting attitudes and strengthening self-esteem alongside direct support for academic behaviors, a dual-pronged strategy that addresses both the input and the mediator. Such an approach could be more efficient than interventions targeting academic satisfaction directly, because it leverages the upstream mechanisms that sustain well-being over multiple years.</p>
<p>The study also demonstrates the power of open national panel datasets to answer questions that individual laboratories cannot. By mining the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018, Yang and Park transformed a public archive into a rigorous test of developmental theory, using latent growth modeling and autoregressive cross-lagged analysis to disentangle timing, direction, and mediation. The work received no external funding, and the authors declare no competing interests. As with any observational study, the design cannot conclusively prove causation, and the generalizability of findings from the highly competitive South Korean educational context to other cultures remains an open question for future research. Nevertheless, the central message is likely to resonate across borders: the most powerful thing parents may do for their children&#8217;s academic lives is not to manage the homework, but to nurture, year after year, the quiet conviction that the child is worthy. Self-esteem, the study suggests, is the bridge on which parental love crosses into scholastic satisfaction.</p>
<p>Beyond its substantive findings, the study offers a useful illustration of how modern panel research handles the practical realities of longitudinal data. Across multi-wave surveys, some participants inevitably miss one or more measurement occasions, and naive approaches that simply discard incomplete cases can bias results. The analysis employed full information maximum likelihood estimation, a statistical technique that incorporates all available information from every participant across the waves rather than dropping those with partial data, thereby preserving the sample&#8217;s representativeness and improving the precision of trajectory estimates. Model quality was evaluated with conventional fit indices, including the comparative fit index, the Tucker–Lewis index, the root mean square error of approximation, and the standardized root mean square residual, which together indicate how well the specified structural models reproduce the observed patterns of covariance among the repeated measurements.</p>
<p>The research also sits within a broader policy conversation.
