										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dogs have been living alongside humans for thousands of years, but new archaeological, genetic and ethnographic evidence suggests that their transformation from wolves into the world’s most diverse domesticated animal was not a single event. Instead, domestication unfolded gradually through a series of partnerships between mobile hunter-gatherers and wolf populations, with both species influencing the other’s survival, behaviour and biology. The process produced animals capable of thriving everywhere from Arctic sea ice to tropical forests—and eventually gave rise to hundreds of modern breeds.</p>
<p>Dogs were buried beside humans as early as 14,000 years ago, while depictions of dog-like animals appear in ancient art across multiple continents. Their roles were practical and social: they helped people track and kill prey, guarded camps, transported goods, herded animals and provided companionship. Archaeologist Professor Peter Mitchell argues in his new book, <em>First Dogs: Hunter-Gatherers and their Canine Companions from Prehistory to the Present</em>, that hunter-gatherer societies were central to this history, long before agriculture created the intensive human control commonly associated with domestication.</p>
<p>Rather than emerging from one isolated wolf population at one moment in time, dogs may have developed through several interacting pathways. Some wolves could have approached human camps to exploit discarded food, gradually becoming less fearful and more tolerant of human proximity. People, in turn, may have recognised the advantages of keeping animals that could detect danger, locate prey or consume waste. Over many generations, natural selection and human preference would have favoured changes in behaviour, body size, reproductive timing and social communication. Domestication therefore involved both biological adaptation and a changing relationship between two highly social species.</p>
<p>The resulting dogs were shaped by the environments and economies of the people with whom they lived. In the Arctic, robust sled dogs developed the strength and endurance required to pull heavy loads across frozen terrain. Their skeletons show features consistent with repeated mechanical stress, including powerful limb bones and changes in the vertebrae associated with draft work. Stable isotope analysis of ancient bones also indicates that dogs living in coastal Arctic communities often consumed diets rich in marine resources, mirroring the food systems of their human companions. These animals were not simply transport equipment; they were essential components of survival in one of Earth’s most demanding environments.</p>
<p>At high elevations on the Tibetan Plateau, dogs and humans faced another major environmental challenge: hypoxia, the reduced availability of oxygen in thin mountain air. Genetic studies have identified variants in Tibetan dogs associated with adaptation to high altitude, including biological pathways involved in oxygen transport and the regulation of red blood cell production. Comparable adaptations occur in Tibetan human populations, suggesting a striking example of parallel evolution. The genetic changes may have become widespread relatively quickly once dogs established themselves in the region, although low oxygen would initially have restricted their ability to survive and work at extreme elevations.</p>
<p>In tropical forests, selection favoured a different combination of traits. Dogs living with Indigenous hunter-gatherer communities in parts of South America and Southeast Asia were generally smaller and more agile than northern sled dogs. Compact bodies could be advantageous in hot, humid environments, while speed, flexibility and close-range scent tracking helped animals move through dense vegetation. Ethnographic accounts describe communities selecting puppies for hunting ability and managing breeding to preserve useful behaviours. In some areas, interactions with local wild canids may also have introduced genetic variation, although the extent of such crossbreeding remains difficult to establish.</p>
<p>Human cultural priorities produced equally unusual forms of selection. On the Northwest Coast of North America, some Indigenous communities bred small, woolly dogs whose hair was collected and woven into ceremonial blankets. These animals represent a rare example of dogs being selected primarily for a textile resource rather than for hunting, guarding or transportation. Elsewhere, dogs became connected to ritual and spiritual practices, potentially encouraging the preservation of distinctive appearances, vocalisations or behaviours. Their evolution was therefore driven not only by climate and practical work, but also by cultural values and symbolic importance.</p>
<p>Disease may have imposed another powerful limit on where dogs could live. In sub-Saharan Africa, vector-borne illnesses such as trypanosomiasis and ehrlichiosis can severely affect domestic dogs. Such diseases may have restricted canine populations or delayed their expansion into tropical regions, helping explain why dogs—whose early history is associated with northern temperate and Arctic environments—were often less common or arrived later in areas farther south. Evolution is shaped not only by useful resources and favourable conditions, but also by pathogens, parasites and ecological barriers that prevent a species from becoming established.</p>
<p>Modern genetic research shows that many ancient dog lineages disappeared as European breeds spread around the world during colonial expansion. Imported dogs often replaced or genetically diluted local populations, erasing much of the diversity created during earlier human migrations. Yet surviving village dogs and regional lineages still preserve fragments of these ancient histories. Together with archaeological remains, genetic data and Indigenous knowledge, they reveal that dogs did not merely accompany humans as passive followers. They repeatedly adapted to local climates, diets, diseases and cultural systems, while also changing how people hunted, travelled and lived.</p>
<p>Professor Mitchell describes the transition from grey wolves to dogs as an ongoing process rather than a threshold marked by one definitive event. Human influence became increasingly dominant, particularly in recent Western history, when controlled breeding produced highly specialised forms ranging from handbag-sized chihuahuas to giant Great Danes. But the deeper history of dogs began with a more mutual relationship. Across 15,000 years, humans and wolves—and later dogs—formed a complex evolutionary partnership that transformed both species. The modern dog is consequently not just a domesticated wolf, but the biological record of an exceptionally long collaboration between human societies and the natural world.</p>
