A nano-TiO2/oxidized starch composite film optimized by response surface methodology suppressed browning and delayed senescence in postharvest Lanzhou lily bulbs by modulating antioxidant enzyme activities.

According to a study published in Polymer Bulletin, researchers optimized the film's formulation using Box-Behnken response surface methodology. The team treated the amounts of nano-TiO2, glycerol, and oxidized starch as independent variables and used the film's elongation at break, a measure of stretchability, as the response indicator to construct a mathematical model of the preparation process. The optimization procedure converged on a precise formulation: an oxidized starch dosage of 1.9 grams, a glycerol content of 21 percent, and a nano-TiO2 dosage of 0.03 grams.

The coating also delayed senescence, the biological aging process that follows harvest. The researchers traced these effects to the film's influence on the bulbs' enzymatic antioxidant defenses: the coating enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), while decreasing the activity of peroxidase (POD) and reducing the accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker of oxidative damage in the tissue. The study's authors concluded that the developed composite film could effectively prolong the postharvest life of Lanzhou lilies.

Beyond the specific application, they noted that the work provides both theoretical insights and a practical reference for extending the freshness preservation of other fruits and vegetables. The findings were reported in Polymer Bulletin, article number 693, published on 25 October 2026.
