Pediatrician and global health researcher Stephen Obaro received the 2026 Christiana Figueres Policy to Practice Award for work connecting infectious-disease research with policy and practice.

Professor Stephen Obaro, a pediatrician and senior scientist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, has received the Christiana Figueres Policy to Practice Award in the Applied Microbiology International Horizon Awards 2026. The award recognizes individuals whose work connects applied microbiology with policy, practice and implementation. Obaro is a global health researcher and founder of the International Foundation Against Infectious Diseases in Nigeria, known as IFAIN, whose work focuses on reducing preventable childhood deaths from infectious diseases and strengthening health systems in high-burden settings.

The honor is intended to celebrate work that extends beyond research to ensure microbiological evidence informs decisions and produces practical, scalable outcomes. It is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and highlights the contribution of applied microbiology to sustainable development policy. Applied Microbiology International describes the prize as recognizing people who have shaped effective strategies, driven systemic change or delivered measurable impact on pressing global challenges. The announcement did not provide a single measured effect attributable to Obaro’s work; rather, it cited the broader and established impact of his research and policy-related activities.

Obaro has conducted global health research for more than two decades, concentrating on pneumonia, typhoid fever, antimicrobial resistance, sickle cell disease and emerging infectious threats affecting children in Africa. According to the award announcement, evidence generated by his studies in West Africa has contributed to global vaccine development, disease-surveillance strategies and clinical guidelines. These are reported contributions to scientific and policy processes, not estimates of prevented cases or a quantified estimate of mortality reduction. The announcement also identifies IFAIN as a vehicle for strengthening research capacity, supporting young scientists and translating evidence into solutions tailored to public-health needs.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Obaro said that science has its greatest purpose when it improves lives. He described his experience as a pediatrician and infectious-disease researcher working across Africa, Europe and the United States, emphasizing the importance of communicating and translating knowledge into practice. He said scientific discovery must travel beyond publication and presentation into hospitals, communities and other settings where decisions are made. “The Christiana Figueres Policy to Practice Award therefore resonates deeply with me and I am most humbled and honored for this award,” he said, adding that knowledge must become action and stronger systems must give people hope. Applied Microbiology International is also opening nominations for its 2027 Horizon Awards. The portfolio will include three new Early Career Excellence Awards in environmental conservation, food security and innovation, and public health. Winners across all 12 awards are scheduled to be announced at the LAM ECR Symposium at Queen Mary University of London in June 2027.
