PHILADELPHIA, July 16, 2026 — Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest remains a major public-health failure, with survival rates staying unacceptably low largely because CPR is delayed or never started. The American Heart Association (AHA) points to immediate action as the key variable: the sooner chest compressions begin, the better the odds of survival. In a bid to change that outcome, Major League Baseball (MLB) partnered with the AHA during the 2026 MLB All-Star Game to turn thousands of fans into potential lifesavers.

During All-Star Week, visitors to the Capital One All-Star Village in Philadelphia received Hands-Only CPR training led by certified instructors. The program featured rapid walk-up coaching on the exact steps needed during a collapse: recognize unresponsiveness, call 911 for teens or adults, and start compressions without interruptions. Training emphasized performing compressions at the proper depth and pace—an interval goal that supports circulation during the critical window before professional care arrives.

The initiative is aligned with the AHA’s “Nation of Lifesavers” movement, which aims to double cardiac arrest survival by 2030. At the event, more than 2,500 attendees practiced the technique, reinforcing a core technical message: Hands-Only CPR can be as effective as conventional CPR in the early minutes for many victims. The rationale is physiological—continuous chest compressions help maintain blood flow to the brain and heart until advanced interventions can resume circulation.

The AHA also noted that about 9 out of 10 people who experience cardiac arrest outside hospitals do not survive, frequently due to insufficient bystander response time. Acting immediately can double or triple survival chances, underscoring why mass, accessible training matters as much as clinical guidelines. The AHA publishes official CPR and ECC scientific recommendations that continue to guide public education worldwide.

“Bringing Hands-Only CPR training to the All-Star Village allowed us to connect directly with thousands of fans and equip them with skills that can save lives,” said Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association. “Expanding access to training remains a top priority for us.”

MLB echoed the impact of the collaboration, describing the All-Star platform as part of a broader strategy to embed lifesaving education across high-visibility public events. The AHA’s Nation of Lifesavers Mobile CPR Unit has appeared at major sports milestones, including the Super Bowl, NFL Draft, MLB All-Star Weekend, and NBA All-Star Weekend.

The broader context includes the Smart Heart Sports Coalition, created in 2023 by the NFL to reduce fatal cardiac arrest outcomes among high school athletes. Its approach focuses on operational readiness—emergency action planning, AED access, and coach education—mirroring the same time-critical principle promoted at All-Star Village. Learning CPR takes minutes, but the scientific and real-world stakes are lifelong.

The Bezos Earth Fund has announced a $2 million grant to the University California, Davis, the American Heart Association and other partners to advance “Swap it Smart” as part of its AI for Climate & Nature Grand Challenge. The funding will support research that could help redesign foods, for example optimizing for flavor profile, nutritional properties and lower costs and environmental impact.

Swap it Smart is an AI-powered recipe formulation tool in development by scientists at the UC Davis in collaboration with the Periodic Table of Food Initiative (PTFI), an entity of RF Catalytic Capital co-managed by the American Heart Association and Alliance of Bioversity CIAT and developed by The Rockefeller Foundation. The PTFI provides standardized tools, data and training to map food quality of the world’s edible biodiversity for improved human and planetary health.

“We’re not just teaching AI to understand food, we’re asking it to reimagine what food can be,” said co-principal investigator Ilias Tagkopoulos, professor of computer science at UC Davis and director of the USDA AI Institute for Next Generation Food Systems (AIFS). “Can we harness the power of AI and computational science to design foods that actively promote human and planetary health, without sacrificing taste or affordability?”

The Swap it Smart team will work to advance research that may one day enable food scientists to replace resource-intensive ingredients in food formulations with sustainable alternatives that deliver the same nutrition and sensory experience.

“By integrating deep phenotyping, molecular data, and generative intelligence, we can create better meals and consumer products for our schools, our hospitals and everyday lives,” Tagkopoulos said.

“Our mission is to create a tool that could be used by anyone from farmers and commercial kitchens to home cooks to develop new foods,” said co-principal investigator Justin Siegel, professor in the UC Davis departments of chemistry and of biochemistry and molecular medicine and faculty director of the Innovation Institute for Food and Health (IIFH).

Core to Swap it Smart is the PTFI’s vast and first-of-a kind data infrastructure on the exact chemical composition of thousands of biodiverse foods based on standardized multi-omics tools.

“By combining PTFI’s molecular food composition data, AI and human capacity, we can unlock the intelligence of food itself to design meals and products that nourish people and sustain the planet, working alongside school meals programs, food enterprises and chefs to bring these innovations to the table,” said Selena Ahmed, principal investigator of the Bezos Earth Fund award and executive director of the PTFI.

New ingredients and combinations

Through this effort, researchers will collaborate with practitioners to pull out new combinations or obscure ingredients and create new foods or healthier, more sustainable substitutes.

The PTFI’s continually evolving data set currently includes over 400,000 proteins from 500 commonly consumed foods along with 27,000 bioactives and other small molecules. UC Davis is the North American Center of Excellence of the PTFI, focusing on deep molecular characterization of these proteins and their known or potential effects on human health, as well as fiber, fats, minerals, phytochemicals and other key small molecules (metabolites) present in foods.

“With support from the Bezos Earth Fund, we will be able to better translate the science from the Periodic Table of Food Initiative into real world tools, using data to formulate meals that nourish people and planet,” said John de la Parra, Director, Food at The Rockefeller Foundation.

Swap it Smart will include data on five sustainability pillars: environment, nutrition, health, socioeconomic factors and sensory quality. These five datasets then need to be organized so that the data can be used by AI systems to make predictions and generate new solutions.

In addition to PTFI, AIFS and IIFH, other partners include PIPA, a company founded by Tagkopoulos in 2015 that leverages AI to accelerate discovery in food and health, and Verso Biosciences, both based in Davis, California.

“Working on the interface of AI, nutrition, and health for more than ten years, we’re excited to contribute our ingredient and formulation AI expertise to the development of Swap it Smart. This tool has real potential to create sustainable food concepts, and we’re committed to supporting its successful launch,” said Christos Stamelos, Chief Technology Officer of PIPA.

HOUSTON, August 12, 2025 — In an innovative fusion of sports culture and health advocacy, the renowned Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award is now integrated into the revolutionary EA SPORTS College Football 26 video game, marking a unique milestone where virtual competition meets real-world legacy. This unprecedented partnership between the American Heart Association and EA SPORTS enriches the gaming experience by embedding the prestigious award into the “Dynasty Mode” of the latest release, enabling gamers to compete virtually for one of college football’s highest coaching honors.

EA SPORTS College Football 26, released on July 7, 2025, represents a technical leap forward in sports simulation technology, offering an immersive and authentic portrayal of collegiate football’s vibrant atmosphere. By incorporating the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award within its virtual trophy room, the game not only preserves the historic significance of this accolade but also amplifies its appeal to a younger, tech-savvy demographic. This integration epitomizes how digital platforms can be leveraged to sustain and promote cultural and athletic heritage while simultaneously advancing vital health causes.

Josh Gregory, Senior Manager of Business Development at EA SPORTS, emphasizes the company’s commitment to realism and legacy preservation. The game meticulously simulates the complexities of college football coaching, from strategic play-calling to team management, reflecting the intense dynamics that define the sport. Embedding the Bear Bryant Award within this rich ecosystem provides players with a meaningful objective that celebrates coaching excellence, mirroring the profound impact real-life coaches like Bryant had on the sport. This narrative depth enhances player engagement and connects gameplay to a broader cultural context.

Originating in 1983, the Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards program, now in its 40th year, has long been a cornerstone of college football’s celebration of leadership and coaching genius. Beyond recognizing outstanding achievements on the field, the awards serve a crucial dual purpose by raising awareness and critical funds for cardiovascular research under the auspices of the American Heart Association. This symbiotic relationship bridges the athletic domain with public health, positioning the awards as a platform for education about heart disease and stroke—the two leading causes of mortality in the United States.

The annual Bryant Awards ceremony honors multiple distinctions, including the Heart of a Champion Award, Lifetime Achievement Award, Newcomer Coach of the Year, several Conference Coach of the Year titles, and the coveted National Coach of the Year Award. The latter was awarded in 2024 to Marcus Freeman of the University of Notre Dame. Leveraging enhanced media coverage, the 2025 honoree will be publicly announced at a nationally televised event slated for January 21, 2026, in Houston, Texas, highlighting the enduring prominence and evolving influence of the awards program.

Nancy Brown, CEO of the American Heart Association, underscores the strategic importance of this alliance. By collaborating with a leading sports simulation franchise, the Association innovatively reaches a diverse generation of fans through immersive digital experiences. This not only extends the reach of critical heart health messages but also sanctifies Coach Bryant’s legacy by associating it with ongoing efforts to combat cardiovascular disease, thus marrying cultural celebration with scientific advocacy in an unprecedented manner.

Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant’s meteoric career trajectory, beginning in Moro Bottom, Arkansas, and spanning notable positions at Maryland, Kentucky, Texas A&M, and ultimately the University of Alabama, reflects a narrative of resilience, strategic innovation, and leadership excellence. His record—323 wins, six national titles, and a host of conference championships—cements his status as an icon in collegiate football history. Yet, his untimely death from a heart attack in 1983 also brings to the forefront the intersection of sports, health, and mortality, themes that resonate deeply within this new collaboration.

The strategic integration of the Bear Bryant Award into EA SPORTS College Football 26 is underpinned by sophisticated game development techniques that simulate the multifaceted pressures and decision-making processes faced by coaches. Utilizing advanced AI algorithms and dynamic narrative systems, the game offers players an evolving challenge that mirrors real-world coaching careers. This technological sophistication elevates the authenticity of gameplay while embedding educational elements related to heart health, seamlessly blending entertainment with awareness.

Financially, the Bryant Awards program channels proceeds into groundbreaking cardiovascular research and public health initiatives. The collaboration with EA SPORTS amplifies fundraising potential by drawing in the vibrant gaming community, thereby diversifying donor demographics and raising vital funds with broader societal impact. This symbiotic model illustrates how entertainment platforms can be utilized as catalysts for philanthropy and scientific advancement, embodying a forward-thinking paradigm in nonprofit engagement.

Furthermore, the American Heart Association’s century-long commitment to equitable health, science-driven advocacy, and community support is reinforced by this campaign’s integration into popular culture. By collaborating with a leader in interactive media, the Association not only broadens its public health outreach but also fosters an ecosystem where technology and research coalesce to produce scalable health education, accelerating the diffusion of cardiovascular disease prevention strategies on a mass scale.

The integration extends beyond technical gameplay features; it engages community and fan culture by authenticating the mentorship legacies of coaches who have shaped college football’s identity. This approach encourages players not just to compete, but to appreciate the strategic thought and ethical leadership exemplified by figures like Coach Bryant. By leveraging immersive storytelling alongside precise gameplay simulation, the initiative cultivates a deeper understanding of the sport’s cultural fabric while promoting wellness.

In sum, the convergence of the Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards and EA SPORTS College Football 26 epitomizes a groundbreaking linkage between sports, technology, and health advocacy. It exemplifies how virtual platforms can embody historical tribute, education, and philanthropy simultaneously. As gamers engage with this enriched virtual environment, they participate in a legacy that transcends pixels, honoring the enduring spirit of coaching excellence while contributing to vital efforts against cardiovascular disease.

This collaboration heralds a new chapter in interactive media’s role in societal impact, ushering in expanded possibilities for health organizations, entertainment developers, and sports institutions to jointly craft meaningful narratives that resonate across generations. With the merging of heart-pounding virtual competition and heartfelt health missions, the future of both gaming and public health appears connected in unprecedented, transformative ways.

ATLANTA, JUNE 5, 2025 — Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with thousands succumbing each year due in large part to the absence of immediate, effective intervention. The Atlanta Falcons, in partnership with the American Heart Association (AHA), have intensified efforts to arm players, coaches, and the broader community with lifesaving knowledge and skills during National CPR and AED Week. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), especially when initiated promptly, can dramatically improve survival outcomes by maintaining blood circulation and oxygen delivery to vital organs until professional help arrives.

According to data published by the American Heart Association, an alarming 90% of individuals who experience sudden cardiac arrest outside of hospital settings fail to survive, significantly due to the lack of timely CPR administration. This sobering statistic underscores the vital importance of expanding both public education and practical CPR training. When performed immediately and correctly, CPR can double or triple survival chances, providing critical minutes that otherwise might be lost in cardiac arrest scenarios.

The collaboration between the Falcons and the AHA highlights a sustained three-year commitment to increasing bystander CPR rates in the Atlanta community. This initiative supports the American Heart Association’s Nation of Lifesavers™ campaign, which aspires to double survival rates of cardiac arrest victims by 2030. For the Falcons organization, this mission carries personal resonance. Head coach Raheem Morris notably saved a three-year-old boy’s life using CPR just 12 days after completing American Heart Association training. His intervention is recognized as the first documented CPR save directly tied to the Nation of Lifesavers’ efforts, exemplifying the life-changing ripple effect of targeted education.

Coach Morris and his wife Nicole have since emerged as passionate advocates for CPR awareness, frequently conducting training sessions at community events and among families and friends. Their advocacy underscores the transformative power of equipping everyday individuals with life-preserving skills. The AHA’s CEO Nancy Brown expressed profound gratitude toward the Falcons and the Morris family, emphasizing that immediate CPR not only increases survival rates but also strengthens the overall resilience of communities facing medical emergencies.

The American Heart Association stands at the forefront of resuscitation science and education, continuously refining protocols based on rigorous research. The organization publishes the official scientific guidelines for CPR, ensuring that training programs are grounded in the latest evidence on how to optimize resuscitation outcomes. Given that nearly 75% of cardiac arrests outside hospitals occur at home, the emphasis on empowering individuals at the household level cannot be overstated. Widespread proficiency in CPR skills can greatly increase chances of positive recovery in these critical moments.

Among CPR modalities, compression-only CPR—referred to as Hands-Only CPR—has garnered particular attention for its simplicity and efficacy. This method omits rescue breaths and focuses on delivering uninterrupted chest compressions to maintain critical blood flow. Current research indicates that for adult sudden cardiac arrest victims, Hands-Only CPR can be just as effective as traditional CPR involving breaths during the initial response phase. This streamlined technique lowers barriers to action, making it accessible for the general public to learn and effectively perform.

The core message of Hands-Only CPR is straightforward: immediately call emergency services upon witnessing a teen or adult collapse, followed by firm, rapid compressions pressing deep into the center of the chest. These compressions should be delivered at a rate of 100 to 120 per minute, which can coincide with a brisk beat of familiar songs such as “Stayin’ Alive.” Such clear, memorable guidelines help demystify CPR for laypeople, enabling confident intervention during time-sensitive cardiac events.

In addition to community education, the American Heart Association has partnered with the National Football League (NFL) and other major sports leagues through the Smart Heart Sports Coalition. Launched in 2023, this coalition advocates for uniform, evidence-based policies across all 50 states aimed at reducing fatalities from cardiac arrests among high school athletes. With as many as 23,000 individuals under 18 experiencing sudden cardiac arrest annually outside hospital settings, and almost 40% of those events linked to sports, targeted preventative measures in schools represent a critical public health opportunity.

These policies include improved access to AEDs, mandatory CPR training for coaches and athletic staff, and heightened awareness of cardiac symptoms among young athletes. Given that sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death in student-athletes, proactive steps to implement these cost-effective and scientifically supported interventions could drive significant reductions in mortality. The coalition’s efforts align with the broader goals of the Nation of Lifesavers campaign and demonstrate the powerful synergy between scientific research, public health advocacy, and community engagement.

The American Heart Association continues to provide an array of resources to support CPR education, ranging from online tutorials to comprehensive community toolkits aimed at reducing disparities in cardiac arrest outcomes. These materials are designed to be culturally sensitive and accessible, reflecting the urgent need to address health inequities that contribute to differing survival rates across populations. The organization invites everyone to invest just 90 seconds in learning Hands-Only CPR through accessible platforms like www.heart.org/HandsOnlyCPR, fostering a culture of preparedness and lifesaving readiness.

The story of Raheem Morris and the Atlanta Falcons exemplifies how leadership and partnership can drive impactful change beyond the football field. Their dedication has translated into tangible lifesaving interventions that resonate on a community level and inspire broader public participation. As cardiac arrest remains a silent adversary claiming lives unexpectedly, equipping citizens with CPR and AED skills remains one of the most effective strategies to tip the scales in favor of survival.

Immediate, empowered action in response to cardiac arrest is more than a medical recommendation; it is a civic imperative that bridges research, education, and real-world application. The work of the American Heart Association and its partners underscores that with proper training, widespread CPR knowledge can become a pillar of community health resilience—transforming bystanders into lifesavers and changing survival statistics one chest compression at a time.

By embracing the simplicity and accessibility of Hands-Only CPR, empowering youth through school programs, and fostering collaborations across sectors, the campaign against sudden cardiac arrest is poised to save thousands more lives in the years ahead. The intersection of cutting-edge resuscitation science and community commitment signals a hopeful future where fewer lives are lost to preventable cardiac events.

DALLAS — In an ambitious effort to confront one of the leading causes of sudden death in the United States, the American Heart Association (AHA) has joined forces with the National Football League (NFL) to dramatically improve public confidence and capability in responding to out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. Statistical data reveal a sobering reality: approximately nine out of every ten individuals who suffer cardiac arrest outside hospital settings fail to survive. This stark survival gap underscores an urgent need for widespread, effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) education and intervention. Scientific studies have shown that immediate administration of CPR can double or even triple survival rates, a fact that fuels the intensification of initiatives like the AHA’s Nation of Lifesavers™ movement.

The collaboration between the NFL and the AHA represents a continuation of nearly two decades of partnership dedicated to improving cardiac health outcomes and promoting lifesaving skills. This initiative is underscored by an ambitious goal to double the survival rate from cardiac arrests by the year 2030, an objective grounded in rigorous epidemiological research and emergency medical evidence. Central to this effort is the expansion of accessible CPR training opportunities nationwide, targeting not only sports fans and communities but also policy advocacy to embed lifesaving protocols into public institutions.

Cardiac arrest events predominantly occur in residential settings—nearly seventy-five percent happen at home. This fact accentuates the critical need for ordinary citizens to acquire the competence and urgency needed to perform CPR effectively. “Knowing how to perform CPR can literally be the difference between life and death for someone you know and love,” states Nancy Brown, the American Heart Association’s Chief Executive Officer. Enhancing public recognition of cardiac arrest symptoms and broadening access to immediate resuscitative action are foundational to improving population health outcomes.

One of the mainstays of the campaign is the promotion of Hands-Only CPR, a simplified version of CPR focusing exclusively on chest compressions without mouth-to-mouth ventilation. Scientific research demonstrates that Hands-Only CPR can be as effective as traditional CPR during the critical initial minutes following cardiac arrest. This method also reduces barriers to initiation, as it is easier to learn, less intimidating, and eliminates concerns about disease transmission. The recommended response protocol is straightforward: upon witnessing an adolescent or adult collapse, a bystander should immediately call emergency services and commence rapid, forceful compressions in the center of the chest at an optimal rate and depth.

The NFL Draft Experience in Green Bay, Wisconsin, serves as a strategic venue for deploying the AHA’s Nation of Lifesavers Mobile CPR Unit. This on-site initiative offers free Hands-Only CPR training sessions, making resuscitation education accessible to thousands of football enthusiasts and community members alike. The interactive training emphasizes correct technique, including compression depth and rate, crucial factors identified by resuscitation science as directly influencing cardiac arrest survival odds. The objective is to convert passive observers into active lifesavers, thereby strengthening community resilience in cardiac emergencies.

The public’s awareness of cardiac arrest and the imperative for immediate intervention was galvanized in part by the widely publicized cardiac arrest suffered by Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin during a January 2023 Monday Night Football game. Hamlin’s survival and subsequent role as the National Ambassador for the Nation of Lifesavers campaign exemplify how high-profile cases can inspire collective action and elevate the urgency of CPR training accessibility. His involvement helps personalize the cause and galvanizes NFL teams and communities to embrace lifesaving preparedness.

Over six decades, the American Heart Association has been instrumental in advancing resuscitation science and developing evidence-based CPR guidelines that are globally recognized and adopted. The Nation of Lifesavers initiative embodies the culmination of extensive research aimed at optimizing prehospital cardiac arrest care. Its objectives extend beyond education to include promoting the widespread availability and use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs), devices proven to significantly raise survival rates by restoring effective heart rhythms during cardiac arrest episodes.

In collaboration with the NFL, the AHA also champions legislative action through the Smart Heart Sports Coalition, striving to ensure all U.S. states adopt policies mandating cardiac emergency response plans in public high schools. This advocacy focuses on implementing protocols tailored to rapidly identify and treat cardiac events in school settings, where emergency action plans incorporating AED accessibility and trained responders have been shown to markedly improve survival outcomes in youths. Given that approximately 40% of pediatric cardiac arrests occur in the context of sports, this legislative movement seeks to safeguard young athletes through robust preparedness.

Epidemiological data estimate that annually more than 23,000 children under 18 experience cardiac arrest outside of hospitals in the United States. The magnitude of this crisis is magnified by the fact that children experiencing cardiac arrest in schools equipped with AEDs have a survival rate approximately seven times higher than overall pediatric survival figures. This highlights the life-saving potential of early defibrillation combined with effective CPR as a standard component of school emergency protocols, emphasizing an evidence-based approach to public health intervention.

The NFL’s leadership in public policy and advocacy further amplifies the impact of these initiatives. With the 2025 NFL Draft hosted in Green Bay, the league actively promotes access to critical CPR education, urging policymakers to enact legislation that equips school communities with both the equipment and training necessary to combat cardiac emergencies swiftly and effectively. This engagement reflects the NFL’s commitment to athlete safety and community health beyond the playing field, recognizing cardiac arrest as a preeminent threat to young athlete mortality.

Participation by numerous NFL teams across diverse regions exemplifies the broad reach of the AHA’s training programs. From the Atlanta Falcons to the Tennessee Titans, teams have facilitated CPR and AED training for staff and community members, effectively transforming their local environments into safer spaces. Such widespread educational efforts underscore a systems-based public health approach, where multiple stakeholders collaborate to build capacity for emergency response, a critical determinant in improving out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival.

The call to action is clear: every individual, regardless of location or background, is encouraged to dedicate a brief 90 seconds to learning Hands-Only CPR through accessible online platforms such as the AHA’s Nation of Lifesavers website. This minimal time investment could empower countless people to act decisively in cardiac emergencies, thereby turning potential bystanders into lifesavers and transforming public health outcomes nationwide.

The American Heart Association’s partnership with the NFL, bolstered by evidence-based strategies from decades of resuscitation research, represents a landmark campaign in the fight against cardiac arrest mortality. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, this initiative aims to rewrite the narrative of cardiac arrest survival, transforming it from a grim statistic into a growing story of hope, empowerment, and life.

The American Heart Association, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Rams, has taken a significant step towards improving cardiac emergency readiness in schools. Recently, representatives from 22 local institutions gathered at the Rams’ locker room in SoFi Stadium for a vital training session focused on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). This initiative underscores the alarming reality that nearly 90% of individuals who suffer cardiac arrest outside a hospital setting do not survive, primarily due to the absence of immediate CPR. Research indicates that immediate CPR can double or even triple the chances of survival, highlighting the critical necessity for educational programs and community engagement aimed at equipping citizens with lifesaving skills.

As Nancy Brown, the chief executive officer of the American Heart Association, stated, the chain of survival hinges on early recognition and swift action during cardiac emergencies. In scenarios where every second counts, a prepared and confident bystander can make an unparalleled difference. The partnership with the Rams not only helps to raise awareness but also strengthens the community ties that are essential in promoting health and safety. The 2025 initiative marks a celebratory year for the American Heart Association as it reaches a monumental 100 years of impactful work in resuscitation science and public health advocacy.

The event was not merely a one-time training; it serves as part of a larger strategy to ensure that CPR knowledge permeates through various educational settings, particularly in high schools where young individuals are often unprepared for emergencies. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 75% of cardiac arrests that occur outside of a hospital transpire in home environments, which further emphasizes the importance of community-based training initiatives. By empowering students and faculty with the knowledge and ability to perform CPR, the potential for positive health outcomes increases and fosters a culture of lifesaving preparedness.

In addition to hands-on training in CPR, the Rams organization has committed to funding resources that will allow schools to continue these educational efforts. Participating schools received CPR in Schools kits, which are pivotal in enhancing training capabilities. Each kit includes manikins for practice and educational materials that enable schools to train not just students, but also staff and parents, thus expanding the reach of lifesaving knowledge. The provision of AEDs to several schools further bridges the resource gap, ensuring that lifesaving tools are available in the immediate vicinity of potential emergencies.

The Hands-Only CPR technique, which emphasizes chest compressions without mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, has been widely recognized for its effectiveness in the initial moments of an emergency. It is a straightforward practice; witnessing a teen or adult collapse suddenly necessitates a call to 911 followed by firm, rapid compressions at the center of the chest. This simplified approach reduces barriers to learning and allows anyone—regardless of formal medical training—to step in during a crisis. The crucial message here is that when laypersons are informed and equipped, they become invaluable links in the survival chain.

In the realm of education and public health, partnerships such as the one between the American Heart Association and the Los Angeles Rams exemplify a commitment to community wellness. Johnathan Franklin, the Rams’ senior director of social justice and football development, noted the alignment with the NFL’s broader initiative to elevate CPR education not just within the sport but throughout society. The knowledge imparted during this training not only provides immediate assistance in emergencies but also fosters a culture of preparedness among youth, who are the future leaders of their communities.

The formation of coalitions like the Smart Heart Sports Coalition, which launched in 2023, is another critical aspect of this initiative. In collaboration with various sports organizations, including the NBA and MLS, the coalition’s goal is to advocate for life-saving policies across all 50 states. This integral mission addresses the staggering statistics revealing that approximately 23,000 individuals under 18 face cardiac arrest annually outside hospital settings, a significant portion stemming from athletic activity. By implementing straightforward, evidence-based strategies, the coalition aims to mitigate fatalities and foster safe environments for young athletes.

The importance of understanding the difference between cardiac arrest and heart attacks cannot be overstated. While both conditions are critical and require immediate medical attention, cardiac arrest is an electrical malfunction leading to a cessation of heart function, necessitating immediate CPR and defibrillation. Conversely, a heart attack occurs when blood supply to the heart is blocked, often requiring different medical interventions but underscoring the need for awareness and readiness in emergencies. Educational outreach plays a pivotal role in bridging these knowledge gaps.

Educational institutions can significantly benefit from these initiatives. The American Heart Association’s emphasis on incorporating CPR training into school curricula aligns with the need for comprehensive health education. By adjusting educational policies to include CPR training, educational systems can enhance student readiness and promote a health-focused culture. Ensuring that young people are cognizant of the life-saving measures they can take enriches their educational experience and prepares them for real-world challenges.

In conclusion, the collaboration between the American Heart Association and the Los Angeles Rams serves as a benchmark for school-based health initiatives. It underscores the importance of community involvement in health education and the vital role that organizations can play in preparing future generations for emergencies. The initiative, with its focus on CPR and AED training, promises to create a ripple effect, leading to more informed communities capable of responding effectively in critical situations. As we celebrate a century of the American Heart Association’s achievements, the focus remains on advancing health equity and fostering a culture of preparedness, which together can dramatically shift the outcomes of cardiac emergencies.

This collaboration is a call to action; it highlights that while technology and advanced medical practices are essential, there is no substitute for immediate, effective response by trained individuals in our communities. As more people become educated and empowered, we inch closer to a future where every cardiac emergency can be met with swift, confident action—ultimately saving lives and enhancing community resilience against sudden health crises.

As the alarmingly high death rate from sudden cardiac arrests continues to plague society, a recent collaboration between the American Heart Association (AHA) and notable athletes from the NBA and NBA G League aims to combat this pervasive issue through increased awareness and education surrounding cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The statistics are haunting: over half of the individuals who experience sudden cardiac arrest outside of a hospital setting do not receive immediate CPR, leaving their chances of survival significantly diminished. In fact, nearly 90% of these incidents result in fatalities, underscoring the critical need for timely intervention.

CPR is not just an emergency procedure; it is a vital skill that can mean the difference between life and death. Research indicates that when CPR is performed immediately after a person collapses, the likelihood of survival can double or even triple. The push for more widespread CPR education comes at a crucial time, as more Americans express their willingness and readiness to perform the technique in emergencies. According to survey data gathered by the AHA, confidence in executing CPR has seen a promising uptick, rising from 30% among adults in 2021 to 35% in 2023. This trend is a testament to the effectiveness of ongoing awareness efforts and partnership initiatives aiming to equip the public with lifesaving skills.

February, designated as American Heart Month, provides an ideal backdrop for the launch of the 2025 Nation of Lifesaver NBA/G League Ambassador Class. This group comprises current players from the league who will take on an active role in advocating for CPR education through public service announcements and impactful social media initiatives. By leveraging their platforms and influence, these ambassadors will foster an environment that encourages individuals to seek out CPR training, ultimately aiming to save more lives in critical moments.

This initiative finds its roots in the broader Nation of Lifesavers movement, which the AHA established in response to the shocking incident involving NFL player Damar Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a live televised game. The movement encapsulates the AHA’s mission as the foremost authority in resuscitation science, aiming to double survival rates from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests by 2030. As the leading organization in CPR education and research, the AHA provides an array of resources for individuals looking to familiarize themselves with CPR practices.

Education is the cornerstone of effective emergency response. The AHA emphasizes that a mere 90 seconds is all it takes to learn the fundamental techniques of Hands-Only CPR—a simplified approach that focuses solely on chest compressions without mouth-to-mouth ventilation. When faced with an adult or teen collapsing, witnesses are urged to act decisively: call 9-1-1 immediately and begin chest compressions at a pace of 100 to 120 beats per minute and a depth of approximately two inches. This approach not only maximizes blood flow to vital organs but also helps to keep the heart functioning adequately until professional aid arrives.

As the numbers and stories continue to underscore the immediate need for CPR training, special attention has been given to children and student-athletes, who are disproportionately affected by cardiac events outside of hospital settings. The AHA’s partnership with the Smart Heart Sports Coalition, formed by the NFL, aims to enact policy changes across all 50 states that will protect student-athletes from the fatal outcomes of cardiac arrest. Current estimates suggest that around 23,000 children under 18 experience cardiac arrests annually, with a staggering 40% of these cases among those involved in athletics.

The spectrum of cardiac arrest extends beyond just the medical realm; the societal implications are profound. Knowing how to perform CPR is an essential skill in any environment, especially considering that nearly three-quarters of cardiac arrests occurring outside of a medical facility happen in homes. By implementing community training programs and advocating for increased public awareness, initiatives like the Nation of Lifesavers can foster a generation of individuals prepared to respond to emergencies with confidence and skill.

As we delve deeper into the AHA’s initiatives, it’s clear that their commitment goes beyond mere statistics; it includes transforming health outcomes and saving lives. Nancy Brown, the CEO of the American Heart Association, articulated this mission succinctly, emphasizing the organization’s dedication to empowering communities and enabling them to react swiftly when it matters most. Education concerning CPR is vital, as it can dramatically improve survival rates during cardiac emergencies, thereby reducing the burdens that society faces in dealing with unattended cardiac arrests.

The collaboration between the AHA and NBA players serves as an inspirational model for leveraging celebrity influence for socially responsible causes. Athletes, who are often revered figures within their communities, can command attention and inspire action, leading to significant changes in public health perceptions. By harnessing their platforms, these ambassadors transform awareness into action, encouraging fans and followers to take CPR training seriously.

The importance of CPR education cannot be overstated. It is a critical part of the collective effort to improve survival rates and foster healthier communities. With the AHA’s extensive experience in CPR training spanning over six decades, the organization’s resources and educational efforts are invaluable for those looking to learn and master the skill. Additionally, the establishment of well-respected guidelines for CPR practice serves to empower individuals to act competently during emergencies.

In conclusion, the collaborative effort between the American Heart Association and the NBA is a pivotal development in the fight against sudden cardiac arrest. By prioritizing education about CPR, the initiative aims to not only equip individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to save lives but also to foster a culture of preparedness in emergencies. Together, we can create a safer society, where the threat of cardiac arrest is met with swift and effective action.

The landscape of cardiac emergencies poses an alarming challenge for communities across the United States. Every year, over 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside hospital settings, claiming the lives of a staggering 90% of victims. In response to this urgent health crisis, a collaborative movement is underway, led by the American Heart Association (AHA) and Walgreens. This partnership aims to revolutionize the nation’s approach to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), transforming ordinary citizens into empowered lifesavers. The initiative emphasizes the need for immediate action in emergencies, highlighting the pivotal role of timely CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators (AED) in increasing survival rates.

Sudden cardiac arrest can strike any individual at any time, turning bystanders into crucial first responders. Yet, statistics reveal a troubling reality: less than half of those experiencing cardiac arrest receive bystander assistance. This gap in care underscores the necessity for widespread education and training in CPR techniques. Without prompt intervention, the odds of survival decrease significantly. Walgreens’ commitment to the AHA’s Nation of Lifesavers movement is a proactive strategy to combat this issue, as they work to integrate CPR training into their stores and surrounding communities. By fostering a culture of preparedness, they aim to prepare individuals to act confidently and effectively in times of crisis.

The significance of immediate CPR cannot be overstated. It can double or even triple a victim’s chances of survival, but only if bystanders initiate the process swiftly. Recent survey data from the AHA indicates a notable increase in public willingness to perform CPR since the launch of the Nation of Lifesavers movement in 2023. This change in attitude follows highly publicized cases of cardiac arrest, such as the incident involving NFL player Damar Hamlin, which captivated the nation and sparked discussions on the necessity of CPR education.

The AHA has set an ambitious goal: to double the survival rate from out-of-hospital cardiac arrests by the year 2030. However, achieving this goal requires collective action and a sustained focus on education. Walgreens’ multi-year, $15 million commitment signifies a remarkable investment in public health, utilizing point-of-sale campaigns to enhance awareness and access to life-saving skills and resources. The initiative is aimed at extending CPR knowledge to Walgreens’ millions of customers and community members while enlisting the participation of team members and healthcare professionals to amplify outreach efforts.

By fostering an environment where CPR training is readily available, the partnership between Walgreens and the AHA seeks to dismantle barriers that prevent individuals from learning these vital skills. Company officials express a deep understanding of the role that the community pharmacy plays in healthcare delivery. With a daily footfall of nearly nine million customers, Walgreens is strategically positioned to influence public health outcomes significantly. The pharmacists within the Walgreens family will not only serve as educators but also as advocates, ensuring that customers feel empowered to act in emergencies.

In addition to increasing awareness, the initiative will include grassroots educational efforts aimed at enhancing CPR preparedness across various demographics. From young adults to senior citizens, the focus will be on providing training that is accessible and relevant. The AHA’s Nancy Brown emphasizes that despite the rise in public willingness to learn CPR, comprehensive training is essential for individuals to feel confident stepping in during emergencies. The skills acquired through these programs could make the difference between life and death for someone experiencing cardiac arrest.

Moreover, this partnership exemplifies a broader shift in how healthcare organizations collaborate to foster community health. The emphasis on grassroots engagement reflects a growing recognition that community involvement is critical to enhancing health outcomes. By leveraging Walgreens’ extensive national presence, the AHA aims to create a ripple effect, providing tools and resources to communities that can ultimately reduce mortality rates associated with sudden cardiac events.

A noteworthy aspect of this initiative is its focus on technology integration in training programs. With advancements in virtual reality and mobile applications, CPR training is becoming more accessible than ever before. The use of such technologies can transform the learning experience, making it more engaging and effective for participants. This reflects a modern approach to public health education, aligning with the digital habits of today’s population.

As Walgreens embarks on this journey in partnership with the AHA, the anticipated impact on community health is profound. A crucial element of this endeavor is the dissemination of information and resources that emphasize urgency and effective response in the face of cardiac emergencies. Community outreach will extend beyond traditional educational forms, utilizing social media, local events, and partnerships with other organizations to spread awareness of the lifesaving potential of CPR.

Individuals are now urged to take action and seek forthcoming CPR classes available in their communities. The call to action stresses the importance of being equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to make a difference in emergency situations. With the resources provided by the AHA and support from Walgreens, the goal to create a nation of confident lifesavers is within reach.

The journey involves not just training individuals but changing societal attitudes towards cardiac emergencies. It emphasizes that anyone can become a lifesaver, irrespective of their background or professional training. The AHA and Walgreens are steadfast in their belief that equipping every community with the knowledge of CPR and the proper use of AEDs can catalyze a profound transformation in survival rates following cardiac arrests.

In summary, the partnership between the American Heart Association and Walgreens epitomizes a transformative approach to addressing cardiac health emergencies. By focusing on education, training, and community engagement, this initiative aims to empower individuals and build a culture of readiness. As efforts ramp up to educate millions, the potential to save lives grows exponentially, fostering a future where fewer families have to face the devastating impact of sudden cardiac arrests.

DALLAS, Feb. 19, 2025 — Recent research underscores an important concept in public health: the conditions and environments in which individuals are born, live, work, learn, and age significantly influence their overall health and life expectancy. This “social determinants of health” paradigm suggests that factors such as socioeconomic status, education, and accessibility to nutritious food can be more telling indicators of health outcomes than genetic predispositions. The stark paradox is that in urban settings across the United States, merely traveling a few miles can lead to markedly different life expectancies for residents. This necessitates a multifaceted approach to health equity and wellbeing.

In response to these disparities, the Grubhub Community Fund has generously contributed a $2 million grant to the American Heart Association’s Social Impact Funds. This initiative is primarily aimed at tackling issues surrounding food insecurity, fostering technological innovation, and bolstering economic resilience in metropolitan areas like New York City and Chicago. The collaboration between Grubhub and the American Heart Association illustrates a concerted effort to address some of the pressing health challenges faced by many communities today.

The grant represents an infusion of essential resources that can help bridge critical gaps in health care access and food security. Regina Benjamin, the chair of the Social Impact Funds Impact Investment Committee and former U.S. Surgeon General, elaborates on this mission, emphasizing how such support empowers communities to transcend barriers that inhibit equitable healthcare and socioeconomic equality. The notion that philanthropic efforts can be transformed into actionable change is a powerful message that resonates with stakeholders invested in public health.

The American Heart Association Social Impact Funds aim to allocate this new funding to a maximum of twelve organizations and entrepreneurs who are leading impactful initiatives in Chicago and New York City. By utilizing a proprietary sourcing and performance management process, the Fund will focus on amplifying efforts that contribute to improving health equity. A significant point of interest within these efforts pertains to the selection of organizations that have already been identified for support.

Among the organizations highlighted is CareYaya, a North Carolina-based marketplace designed to connect families with students in pre-health programs, thus addressing the urgent need for affordable and flexible in-home care. This initiative serves not only to enhance caregiving resources but also to expand the workforce in an era where caregiver shortages are increasingly critical. By employing innovative technology solutions, CareYaya effectively integrates community care into the fabric of healthcare delivery, offering potentially life-saving support in the home environment.

Similarly, Farm Generations Corporation, located in New York, plays a vital role in promoting agricultural sustainability while ensuring food access through a farmer-owned cooperative model. Their flagship innovation, GrownBy, is a direct-to-consumer e-commerce platform that couples technological advancement with community engagement. This model not only harnesses the power of the internet to facilitate food access but is also tailored to meet the rigorous standards of the SNAP program, thus augmenting food security among low-income populations.

Chicago’s Nectar further drives the narrative of innovation by blending food security with health outcomes. This platform recognizes the significance of nutrition in health management by providing access to food as medicine initiatives. By collaborating with charitable food organizations, Nectar emphasizes the integral role that proper nutrition plays in preventive health care while simultaneously enhancing community well-being. This holistic perspective on food as a vital component of health positions Nectar as a leader in the fight against food insecurity.

RiseKit, also based in Chicago, takes a unique approach by aiming to empower underrepresented talent through job training programs and community-based organizations. This software platform connects individuals to employment opportunities while addressing the broader social determinants of health. By improving economic outcomes for marginalized populations, RiseKit contributes to a larger goal of achieving health equity. Their efforts highlight the intersection of job training and public health, reinforcing the view that economic stability is a fundamental pillar of community health.

Grubhub’s commitment to social responsibility is reflected in their active role in supporting these initiatives, particularly in their largest market, New York City, and their hometown of Chicago. The collaboration with the American Heart Association marks a significant milestone in a shared vision to promote food security and enhance technological capacity in the nonprofit space. Through funding and strategic partnerships, Grubhub aims to manifest real, positive changes in the communities they serve, fostering environments where health equity is not just envisioned but actively pursued.

The selection process for organizations receiving funding from the Social Impact Funds is rigorous, emphasizing innovative, evidence-based approaches to health challenges. By aligning with the mission of the American Heart Association, these organizations are strategically positioned to make a lasting impact on the health landscape. Each funded program embodies a commitment to addressing not just health-related issues, but the underlying structural inequities that perpetuate disparities in health outcomes.

The broader implications of these initiatives may serve as a model for future collaborations between corporations and philanthropic organizations. By harnessing resources and expertise to address systemic health challenges, stakeholders can catalyze meaningful change in communities suffering from the effects of poor health outcomes and limited access to essential services. As these efforts unfold, they could inform policy changes and community strategies aimed at mitigating the deep-seated inequities that characterize the current public health landscape.

These groundbreaking initiatives shed light on the importance of integrating community-driven solutions within the framework of public health strategies. With funding being directed toward organizations that demonstrate measurable impact, there is an opportunity for transformative change at the grassroots level. By centering community voices in the development of health interventions, the dialogue around health equity transcends mere rhetoric, becoming action-oriented and results-driven.

While health disparities continue to present formidable challenges, the concerted efforts of organizations like Grubhub and the American Heart Association signal a promising shift toward a more equitable public health landscape. This evolving narrative reminds us that addressing social determinants of health requires collaborative action, innovative thinking, and a steadfast commitment to community well-being. As these partnerships grow, there lies the potential to redefine what it means to invest in health—not just in terms of medical care, but through holistic strategies that prioritize access, opportunity, and equity for all.

This evolving landscape of health equity not only demands innovation in service delivery but also calls for a reevaluation of how we define health and wellness within our communities. Moving forward, it is crucial that we continue to support initiatives that bridge the gap between healthcare, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability. In this manner, we may truly create a world where optimal health is a realistic goal for individuals in every community, irrespective of their circumstances at birth.
