In a significant milestone for open science and scholarly publishing, the American Physical Society (APS) has achieved the highest score among publishers evaluated by the Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics (SCOAP3) in its inaugural assessment of open science practices. This evaluation highlights the Society’s ongoing commitment to transparency, accessibility, and data availability in the world of high-energy physics publishing. Garnering an impressive total score of 20.18 out of 25, the APS outpaced its peers by nearly double, cementing its position as a leader in fostering open scientific communication.

The evaluation by SCOAP3, a coalition comprising over 3,000 libraries and research institutions dedicated to supporting open access in particle physics, was conducted between October 1 and December 31, 2024. SCOAP3’s novel annual assessment aims to incentivize publishers to enhance their open science policies by tying compensation to demonstrable improvements in practices such as data sharing, software availability, and increasing the transparency of the publication process. APS’s exemplary performance reflects its strategic emphasis on integrating these principles across its publishing platforms.

Central to APS’s exemplary rating were its advanced policies surrounding data and software availability. By mandating that research data and the computational tools underpinning published articles be openly accessible, APS ensures that studies can be independently verified and built upon, a cornerstone of rigorous scientific progress. This comprehensive approach serves not only the particle physics community but sets a potential benchmark model for other scientific disciplines to emulate.

Metadata practices also played a pivotal role in the APS’s distinction. The Society’s detailed and structured metadata commitment, implemented through recognized standards such as Crossref, facilitates unprecedented discoverability and interoperability of research outputs. By leveraging persistent identifiers like the Research Organization Registry (ROR) and Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID), APS ensures that authors, institutions, and research outputs are unambiguously linked and easily traceable across digital platforms.

Furthermore, the accessibility of APS web content was evaluated with particular scrutiny. Adopting inclusive design strategies, the Society’s online portals and journals provide seamless access to a broad audience, including individuals using assistive technologies. This dedication to universal access underscores APS’s mission to eliminate barriers to scientific knowledge dissemination, creating equitable opportunities for engagement across diverse research communities.

APS’s leadership in open science emerges from a legacy rooted in innovation. Since 1991, when it championed the launch of arXiv and the concept of preprints, the Society has consistently advanced initiatives that democratize scientific information. Today, its open science mission permeates not only the three SCOAP3-participating journals—Physical Review Letters, Physical Review C, and Physical Review D—but extends comprehensively to all APS publications, reflecting institutional dedication at every level.

Looking forward, APS is actively exploring novel avenues to further enhance transparency within the peer review process. The Society is currently piloting a peer review assistant powered by artificial intelligence, alongside research integrity checks, in partnership with Purpose-Led Publishing. These technologies aim to augment the rigor and fairness of peer review, reduce biases, and maintain high ethical standards, all while preserving the confidentiality and quality necessary for scientific discourse.

This pioneering spirit aimed at continuous improvement reflects the belief articulated by APS leadership that such efforts are not merely procedural but fundamentally "the right thing to do for science." By enhancing accessibility, discoverability, openness, and transparency, APS ensures its journals are primed to amplify their impact and encourage robust scientific collaboration globally.

The importance of such initiatives is further underscored by Jeff Lewandowski, director of publishing at APS, who emphasized that supporting open science maximizes the return on investment in scientific research. This creates a virtuous cycle where funding bodies, researchers, and the broader public all benefit from more accessible and credible scientific knowledge. Collaboration with entities such as CERN and other society publishers amplifies these collective efforts, building a stronger, more connected research ecosystem.

The unique framework of SCOAP3 enables these advancements by rewarding publishers who commit to open science. With the evolving landscape of academia demanding increasingly transparent and inclusive practices, this kind of assessment sets a new paradigm, encouraging other publishers to follow suit or innovate further to meet rising expectations.

Moreover, the APS commitment extends beyond the mechanics of open access. The Society invests continuously in developing infrastructure and policies that uphold the reproducibility of research findings, one of the pivotal challenges in contemporary science. By ensuring that published articles come with accessible, verifiable data and well-documented software, APS supports scientists in reconstructing, validating, and building on prior work effectively.

In conclusion, the American Physical Society’s leading score in the SCOAP3 evaluation is more than just a accolade; it signifies a transformative advancement in how scientific knowledge is published and shared. It embodies a vision where openness, ethical integrity, and technological innovation converge to propel science forward. As the APS continues to pioneer reforms and technology integrations, it serves as an exemplar for the global academic publishing industry, reinforcing the notion that science thrives best in the open.

Sage Publishing’s 2024 Independence with Impact Report: A Year of Progress and Commitment

In a world increasingly defined by misinformation, Sage Publishing has once again positioned itself as a leader in academic publishing with the release of its 2024 Independence with Impact Report. This report not only encapsulates the achievements of the past year but also underscores Sage’s unwavering dedication to fostering critical thinking, promoting diversity, and supporting academic freedom. For six decades, Sage has been pivotal in transforming the landscape of knowledge dissemination, and this year’s report is a testament to the company’s commitment to progressive values.

The 2024 report reveals the significant strides that Sage has made in various essential areas, aligning its efforts with the current needs of society. One of the report’s key highlights is the comprehensive range of teaching resources that Sage has developed to counter the pervasive spread of misinformation. In this digitally saturated age, the ability to discern facts from fiction is critical. Therefore, all Sage educational materials for 2024 are designed to equip students with the vital skills necessary for effective critical thinking. This initiative supports a broader societal need for enhanced media literacy, which has become increasingly important in an era marked by distrust and confusion around information sources.

Moreover, Sage hosted the fifth annual Critical Thinking Bootcamp, which has garnered attention for its innovative approach to engaging educators and students alike. Featuring prominent thought leaders, such as bestselling author Dr. Tom Chatfield, the Bootcamp created an interactive platform for participants to explore new paradigms of thought and discourse. Attracting over 2,000 registrants globally, the event stands as a prime example of Sage’s dedication to fostering an informed and engaged community capable of navigating complex information landscapes.

In addition to enhancing critical thinking capabilities, Sage has also prioritized accessibility in research with innovative tools such as Sage Policy Profiles. This initiative not only enhances researchers’ visibility but also ensures that academic work has tangible implications in broader societal contexts.

The environmental responsibility of academic publishers is more crucial than ever in today’s climate crisis. Sage has taken significant steps towards sustainability, achieving a remarkable 52 percent reduction in global emissions across its operations since 2019. This substantial decline comes not just from corporate responsibility but from a heartfelt commitment to creating a more sustainable future. For a publishing house that deals with the dissemination of knowledge, this action reflects an understanding of its critical role in environmental stewardship, and it sets a precedent for other organizations in the industry to follow.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are also at the forefront of Sage’s operational philosophy. The organization’s latest report highlights that women hold 67 percent of leadership roles in the US and UK, mirroring the workforce diversity present within Sage itself. This equality is not merely a statistic; it represents an organizational ethos where diverse perspectives are not just welcomed but essential. Sage’s alignment with these values is particularly significant, as it positions the organization as a model of social responsibility within the often rigid confines of academia.

Furthermore, Sage has adopted innovative tools to uphold research integrity, illustrating a proactive stance in combating academic misconduct. Becoming the first publisher to utilize Dimensions Author Check reflects Sage’s commitment to transparency and ethical standards in research production. This tool enhances the scrutiny of publication histories and author networks, enabling quick identification of potential misconduct. In an age where trust in research is paramount, Sage’s initiative stands out as a critical step in safeguarding the integrity of scholarly communication.

Additionally, the commitment to community engagement is evident through Sage’s employee volunteer initiatives, with US and UK staff dedicating over 1,600 hours to meaningful nonprofit and charitable endeavors. This engagement not only strengthens the communities in which they operate but also cultivates a corporate culture centered on social responsibility. Employees are encouraged to contribute their time and skills where they can make a difference, fostering a sense of purpose and collective pride within the organization.

Sage’s involvement extends even to celebrating the virtues of reading under challenging circumstances. At the annual American Library Association (ALA) Conference, Sage sponsored the "Banned Books from the Big Chair" event, which drew participation from more than 200 individuals reading passages from their favorite banned books. This event emphasizes the fundamental right to read and challenges the imposed restrictions on knowledge—a cause that resonates deeply with the publishing house’s mission. Such initiatives powerfully affirm Sage’s stance on the importance of intellectual freedom in a world increasingly aware of censorship’s implications.

Reflecting on the past year, Blaise Simqu, Sage’s CEO, emphasized the organization’s enduring commitment to its foundational values. These principles, he notes, have guided Sage since its inception in 1965. As misinformation proliferates and social issues become increasingly complex, the role of academic publishing in fostering a knowledgeable and resilient populace is more vital than ever. The steps taken in 2024 are indicative of a broader philosophy—one that values independence as the bedrock of meaningful accomplishments in the world of academia.

As Sage Publishing steps into the future, excited for the next sixty years, it remains firmly rooted in its mission to drive impactful change through research, education, and community engagement. Each milestone achieved is not merely a statistic but a reflection of the diverse voices and contributions that make up Sage’s community. This commitment assures that, regardless of future challenges, Sage will continue to champion the ideals of inclusivity, sustainability, and scholarship.

Sage Publishing’s 2024 Independence with Impact Report serves as both a reflection of past successes and a roadmap for future endeavors. The organization’s unwavering commitment to enhancing critical thinking, fostering diversity, and maintaining academic integrity in a tumultuous era solidifies its position as a beacon in the scholarly publishing landscape. As society continues to grapple with the complexities of the information age, Sage’s role in nurturing informed, engaged citizens through its publications and initiatives remains indispensable.

Through these sustained efforts and an unyielding focus on core values, Sage Publishing sets a standard for excellence in the academic community, one that promises to resonate for many years to come. As we celebrate this momentous anniversary, the groundwork laid today inspires confidence in the transformative power of knowledge, ensuring that the pursuit of truth continues to thrive in the face of adversity.
