SAN ANTONIO — Aug. 5, 2019 — George Wilson, a principal scientist at Southwest Research Institute, has been honored with the Award of Merit from ASTM. The prestigious award, which includes the accompanying title of fellow, is ASTM’s highest recognition for individual contributions to developing standards.
The ASTM International Committee on Petroleum Products, Liquid Fuels, and Lubricants selected Wilson for his contributions to improve aviation fuels and lubricants, as well as his participation in the overall development of the committee. Wilson serves in the U.S. Army Fuels and Lubricants Research Facility (AFLRF) located at SwRI for more than 60 years. AFLRF is a government-owned, contractor-operated facility providing advanced research, development and engineering, including filtration research, for the U.S. Army and other government agencies.
Wilson has more than 35 years of experience in jet fuel specification testing and test method development, with emphasis on fuel performance evaluation. As vice chairman of the Aviation Fuel Subcommittee for the Jet Fuel Specifications Section he leads the effort to maintain and improve ASTM D1655, a standard ensuring jet fuel quality.
“George has done some impressive work during his tenure here at the Institute,” said Steven Marty, vice president of SwRI’s Fuels and Lubricants Research Division. “We appreciate his contributions to fuels research and feel that this award is well deserved.”
Wilson, who has received three other ASTM awards, has spent his 20-year career at SwRI working on fuels testing. He is currently working on emerging fuels, including helping to qualify a process to synthesize coal into jet fuel for both fuel blend and fully synthetic versions.
“The recognition by my peers is what makes this award so meaningful to me,” Wilson said. “I also appreciate that SwRI, as a not-for-profit organization, supports the ASTM community by providing time for me to be an officer and a leader in this community.”
