Theoretical contribution
This study has significant theoretical contributions by establishing a new S-O-R research framework to understand how short videos influence adolescent behavior. It expands the boundaries of the S-O-R model by examining the impact of emotional stimulation in videos on adolescents’ willingness to learn martial arts.
Additionally, it introduces perceived usefulness as a concept to understand how adolescents perceive the characteristics of traditional culture through short videos. This research fills a gap in the literature and provides theoretical references for future studies on short video dissemination, traditional culture inheritance, and adolescent behavioral intentions. The integration of three distinct theoretical traditions—the S-O-R model from environmental psychology, flow theory from positive psychology, and perceived usefulness from technology acceptance models—represents a significant theoretical innovation that creates a more comprehensive framework for understanding digital media influence on behavioral intentions. This interdisciplinary approach acknowledges the complexity of motivation formation in digital environments and offers a more nuanced understanding than single-theory models.
Implication for practices
The practical implications of this study highlight the positive influence of short videos on adolescents’ willingness to learn martial arts, suggesting that short video platforms can be utilized as effective learning tools. Incorporating elements of communication interaction, problem discussion, and learning challenges in short videos can enhance motivation and promote communication and cooperation among adolescents. Short videos also play a significant role in the dissemination of martial arts culture, bridging the communication gap between traditional and modern cultures. By understanding the mechanisms that inspire adolescent audiences, short video creators can produce more engaging content, benefiting educators, cultural communicators, and policymakers.
Moreover, short videos contribute to building a multicultural communication platform by overcoming limitations of time and space, fostering multicultural exchange, and promoting mutual understanding between cultures. This suggests a paradigm shift in educational approaches to traditional cultural practices, moving from didactic instruction to emotionally engaging digital experiences. The findings provide empirical support for educational institutions to incorporate short-form video content in cultural education curricula, particularly for physical disciplines like martial arts where visual demonstration is crucial. For cultural preservation efforts, the study demonstrates that traditional practices can be effectively transmitted to younger generations through contemporary digital formats without compromising cultural integrity, challenging the notion that modernization necessarily leads to cultural dilution.
Limitations and future research
All studies have limitations. Our current study focuses on emotional stimulation and flow experience without exploring other psychological factors like self-efficacy or social norms. Future research could incorporate these factors for a more comprehensive understanding. Additionally, the study’s findings are based on a specific dataset, limiting the generalizability of the emotional stimulation factors identified. Future research can consider a wider range of martial arts short videos. Furthermore, exploring the long-term effects of short video engagement on learning outcomes and addressing potential negative effects and ethical considerations associated with short video consumption are important areas for future investigation.
