The 13th Symposium on Polar Science, hosted by the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR), Tokyo, Japan, will be held with an online meeting system from November 15 to 18, 2022. This annual symposium aims to present and promote a wide variety of polar scientific research and interdisciplinary studies.

NIPR began hosting the interdisciplinary Symposium on Polar Science in 2010 to communicate polar science research results worldwide. This symposium is held concurrently with the annual conferences on Antarctic Meteorites, Space and Upper Atmospheric Sciences, Polar Meteorology and Glaciology, Polar Geosciences, and Polar Biology to discuss the situation surrounding the latest research and field activities in these disciplines.

“In this year, Japan plans to finish phase IX of the six-year Japanese Antarctic Prioritized Research Project and to start phase X,” said Tomokazu Hokada, professor of NIPR, who is in charge of this symposium. “Thus, we set the Special Session titled “Towards the next six-year Japanese Antarctic Research Project (phase X).” In this session, we will summarize the results from phase IX and explain new challenges and opportunities in phase X. The interdisciplinary scientific theme of phase X is “The future global environment system as inferred through investigating the past and present of the Antarctic.” We sincerely welcome new and active participants.”

The NIPR engages in comprehensive research via observation stations in Arctic and Antarctica. As a member of the Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS), the NIPR provides researchers throughout Japan with infrastructure support for Arctic and Antarctic observations, plans and implements Japan’s Antarctic observation projects, and conducts Arctic researches of various scientific fields such as the atmosphere, ice sheets, the ecosystem, the upper atmosphere, the aurora and the Earth’s magnetic field. In addition to the research projects, the NIPR also organizes the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition and manages samples and data obtained during such expeditions and projects. As a core institution in researches of the polar regions, the NIPR also offers graduate students with a global perspective on originality through its doctoral program.
