Highlights from the journal CHEST®, February 2022

Glenview, Illinois – Published monthly, the journal CHEST^® features peer-reviewed, cutting-edge original research in chest medicine: Pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine and related disciplines. Journal topics include asthma, chest infections, COPD, critical care, diffuse lung disease, education and clinical practice, pulmonary vascular disease, sleep, thoracic oncology and the humanities.

The February issue of CHEST journal contains 56 articles, including clinically relevant research, reviews, case series, commentary and more. Each month, the journal also offers complementary web and multimedia activities, including visual abstracts, to expand the reach of its most interesting, timely and relevant research.

• COPD
  Looking at 23andMe results, “Prevalence of Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Self-Reported Behavior Change, and Health Care Engagement Among Direct-to-Consumer Recipients of a Personalized Genetic Risk Report ” suggests that direct-to-consumer testing can help identify previously undiagnosed patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. • Critical Care
  A nationwide evaluation of the SEP-1 sepsis bundle, “Effects of Compliance With the Early Management Bundle (SEP-1) on Mortality Changes Among Medicare Beneficiaries With Sepsis: A Propensity Score Matched Cohort Study,” finds that compliance with the measure was associated with a significant reduction in mortality at 30 days. • Pulmonary Vascular
  Original research, “Heart Rate and Mortality in Patients With Acute Symptomatic Pulmonary Embolism,” finds a positive association between heart rate at presentation and pulmonary embolism-related mortality. A visual abstract for this research can be viewed here.

• Thoracic Oncology
  Despite concerns of the COVID-19 pandemic having a negative impact on lung cancer screening rates, “Lung Cancer Screening Rates During the COVID-19 Pandemic” shows that 19 states experienced significant improvements during 2020. Related to this research, CHEST published lung cancer screening guidelines in the journal CHEST and recently created a course on shared decision making with Thomas Jefferson University to increase lung cancer screenings.
