DES PLAINES, IL –Judd Hollander, MD, associate dean for strategic health initiatives at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and professor and vice chair of finance and healthcare enterprises in the Department of Emergency Medicine, will open the annual meeting of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine on Wednesday, May 17, with a keynote address titled, "The Future of Emergency Medicine: What You (and Hopefully I) May Be Doing in 35 Years."
Almost 20 years ago, a task force of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) accurately predicted the growth and importance of electronic information systems, the crowding of emergency departments with greater numbers elderly patients, and the growth of home care, telemedicine, and emergency medicine research. What the task force didn't foresee was the growing number of uninsured, an overall physician shortage, and an increase in hospital-centered care, among other challenges.
Dr. Hollander, who completed his residency in emergency medicine when the specialty was at its genesis, is today among the most respected and prolific members of the emergency medicine specialty. He will address the implications of present challenges on the future of emergency medicine, discuss what forces will mold the future of emergency medicine over the next decades, and provide his thoughts on where emergency medicine is heading and what will it look like when it gets there.
Hollander, a former president of SAEM, has published over 400 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters, is an associate editor for Academic Emergency Medicine, a deputy Editor at the Annals of Emergency Medicine, and a reviewer for many emergency medicine, cardiology and medical journals. In addition to chairing both the SAEM Program Committee and the Emergency Medicine Foundation Scientific Review Committee, Dr. Hollander is a member and past chair of the Emergency Medicine Foundation Scientific Review Committee. Dr. Hollander was the awarded the ACEP Award for Outstanding Research in 2001, the Hal Jayne SAEM Academic Excellence Award in 2003, and the SAEM Leadership Award in 2011.
