The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing (CASW) is now accepting entries for the new Sharon Begley Science Reporting Award. The deadline is April 30, 2022.
The Sharon Begley Science Reporting Award is a career prize recognizing the accomplishments of a mid-career science journalist who exemplifies excellence in covering science for the public. A $20,000 grant will enable the winner, whose work exhibits the high standards Begley’s reporting embodied, to undertake a significant reporting project.
The award was established by CASW to honor Sharon Begley (1956–2021), a science journalist of unflinching dedication, skill, moral clarity, and commitment to mentoring. In more than four decades at Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters and STAT, Begley was trusted by her readers, respected by her sources, and renowned for her authoritative insights, depth, accuracy, scientific rigor, lyrical prose, and myth-busting impact.
Presented annually starting in 2022, the Sharon Begley Science Reporting Award is funded by individual donations through a campaign headed by Sharon’s husband, Ned Groth, a scientist, author and environmental health consultant. It is a key component of CASW’s Science Journalism Initiative to develop new programs to enhance the quality, diversity, and sustainability of science journalism.
