What The Study Did: This study of 19,000 NFL players who began playing football between 1960 and 2019 investigated the risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal neurodegenerative disease. Researchers report 38 players received a diagnosis of ALS and 28 died during the study time frame, representing a significantly higher incidence of ALS diagnosis and death among NFL players compared with the U.S. male population.
